DVD/Blu Ray: Recommendations Please

My Sony DVD player croaked, and I need to replace it. This is the one connected to the main Plasma in the house. My sole intention is to play DVD movies through the Yamaha receiver ... so do I replace it with a DVD player, or go to Blu Ray?

The Plasma is a Sony WEGA, and I don't believe it's 1080.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Well, to be honest, you really should consider Blu-ray.
*ALL* Blu-ray players play and upconvert DVDs great - plus they play Blu-ray Discs!

DVD players are sub-$100, as where BD players are ~$300.
Have you ever seen a Blu-ray Disc playing?
Even on non-1080p sets, the PQ and AQ are better than DVD.

What model WEGA is it?

I'd get a 39.00 home dvd player for now. Sony should have a $200 BD home unit by year's end.

[EDIT] Edited to add "BD" to the $200 player.

They say next year but I'm guessing meeting this goal ($200) by the Christmas shopping season would be a great idea for Sony and the release of the "Dark Knight" on BD around the same time.

Would help with the holiday shopping season. Economic wise.

What profile are those going to be? current or old stock?

The S-350 (profile 2.0 upgradeable) $399.00 list and S550 (profile 2.0 capable) $599.00 list are the only Sony units at this time supporting 2.0..

The S-350 is currently available, but the s550 won't start shipping until sometime this fall.

Thanks all for the input. The WEGA model is KE-37XS910.
I guess I'll pick up a BD ... I actually have a cheap Magnavox DVD player I use with my other LCD, so no good reason to buy a cheapie right now.

Enjoy! I'm gonna wait a bit and see what's available by year's end. You know these things are gonna drop in price dramatically at some point in the not too distant future as more and more consumers dump their old 4:3 CRT's for new 16:9 HDTV's. I remember I paid about $450 for my first bare-bones Pioneer DVD player back in the mid-90's and now they have units that play everything for 30 bucks.

Hold on to something ... I recall paying $700+ for my first VCR! Can you believe it? It was huge and weighed about 50 lbs.

But hey ... it came with two free tape rentals ... two!

The Panny looked similar to this... as did all Matsushita VHS units.

LOL! Me too... I bought a Panasonic OmniVision VHS unit back in 1979 (2/4 hour, mono). 2/4 hour T-120 tapes were $20 a pop. It weighed about 35 pounds, had a mechanical "piano key" transport and a wired pause/play remote. It cost me $749.99 at the time from a place called Service Merchandise here in NJ. Those were the days!. I remember the first thing I taped was the 1979 World Series between Baltimore and Pittsburgh. I was the envy of everyone on the block!

If you're willing to go non-Sony the Samsung BD-P1500 can be found as low as $350 and is also 2.0-ready. It is small in size and has pretty fast boot/load times. Only downside is that it has limited outputs for older televisions/receivers.

What about PlayStation 3? Not only do you get a blu ray player but an awesome gaming machine....killing 2 birds with one stone.

Lots of good suggestions made so far. One additional item to consider is the improved audio from Blu Ray. Most Blu Ray players will internally decode & output Dolby HD, but very few except the very expensive top of the line models will decode DTS HD Master. Unless your receiver will decode DTS Master, you will only get the standard lossy DTS core(same as on standard DVD). The Sony PS3 will decode and output all of the newer HD codecs so you can use it with older receivers.

Good luck with your purchase, I hope you enjoy your Blu Ray player as much as I do.

I hear the PlayStation 3 does not do DTS audio.

While you were posting that, I was out buying it. Sony left a bad taste, and I've had really good luck with Samsung displays, so I grabbed one at Best Buy ... $399. My WEGA doesn't have HDMI (dammit) but component video seems to be really decent.

Thanks again to everyone for the suggestions and input.

I 2nd the PS3. The only cons are no native IR (they're are adapters though) if you use a universal remote and according to some its "noisy" (not to me). And if you have a fancy receiver you can't bitstream HD audio so you can't get the satisfaction of seeing the TrueHD and DTS HD logos light up (it will decode to PCM so you can still hear them). And it probably still has the best load times of any player. It also can double as a media extender as it can play your "acquired" avi's and mkv's (even HD ones). And I think it plays games.
