[Rant] People applauding in movie theaters

No, it's not necessarily a rant, but i find it ridiculous when people clap during or at the end of the movie. I mean, why do people do it? I just saw the new Batman, which by the way, was an excellent movie, but there was way too much clapping in it.
Quite annoying it was. I see no reason for applauding a movie screen with light projected up on it.

It's really easy. Low class, ignorant, people would clap at a movie. It's not a live performance.

WTH? And you base this on what? I'd be more inclined to say many were doing it out of respect for Heath Ledger's last performance.

One likely reason.

Also, applauding is a time-honored customary way to express approval.
I'd figure that, psychologically speaking, it's more expressing to the other human beings in the audience that you approve of what's up on screen, vs. letting the screen itself know how you feel.

Hope you didn't get any onya.

Also, I'd highly recommend the O.P. never go see "The Rocky Horror Picture Show", if audience response in a movie theatre is a problem for him.

Unless he was in the theater still alive, what is clapping doing to honor anything? Is health Ledger the new elvis?

I too absolutely hate it when people clap at a movie. Honestly, if you clap at a movie you are an idiot. The entire idea behind clapping is to show your approval to a person. When watching a movie - guess what folks - THE PEOPLE IN THE MOVIE AREN'T ACTUALLY THERE!!!! I know! Aren't those flickering knew fangled fashioned picture-display machines amazing!

My point is this - Don't clap if the person you are clapping to/for is not there to hear your clapping, or even know that you are clapping to begin with.

Bottom Line - People clapping for movies are idiots. They either have no concept of what clapping means, or they are sheep following the single idiot who proceeds with the clapping.

To be frank, for some reason I find it irritating when people clap when the airplane touches down ....

It's not some amazing feat that should be applauded - that's really what's supposed to happen. Feel free to boo if the pilot doesn't make it, but clapping because he managed to land an aircraft?

Strikes me as a "just-doing-his-job" kinda thing.

There is usually so much other stuff in movie theaters to complain about like kids running around, people behind you talking, cell phones ringing, sticky floors (from soda ), I'm surprised that the clapping bothers you.

No, I took 'How not to be an idiot'.

Clapping as defined by our society is used to express satisfaction or approval to a person. If the person who the clapping is intended for is unaware of the clapping - The clapping is useless. Only an idiot wouldn't realize this fact.

Could you have failed ??

Only an idiot wouldn't realize this fact.

You like to coin that term quite often it seems..

Does it take one to know one ??

Are you basically insecure ??

That is a vile term to call people and you may be exibiting some immaturity by using it...

Glad I'm not as closed minded as you appear to be...

And of course this definition is static and can not ever Ever EVER be changed.

I suggest you stop going to movie theatrs IMMEDIATELY and limit yourself to watching movies at home where you won't be disturbed by a perfectly natural reaction to a shared, possibly moving experience.
