if you are from the northern panhandle or the charleston area (or even traveling these areas), be on the lookout for any installations going on with verizon or its contractors towards the end of this summer and the year. Save this thread and post here if you see anything.

was in charleston saturday getting a new mattress for my bed.... saw a lot of verizon trucks out... however, the thing i saw that was most curious....

was i saw suddenlink vans out everywhere installing fiber!?!?!?!

Looks like suddenlink is gearing up a major upgrade (at least in kanawha city/south charleston where I was driving around)

Still doesn't help me though.... fiber to the house where i live... and all frontier gives us is 3mb dsl....

cool. where did you see the work going on? i was around kc yesterday as well. never saw anything going on. they could be doing upgrades to prepare for docsis 3.0?

we have been working in the cross lanes area near rock branch/poca. vz has space in one of the commercial buildings located in rock branch where they store equipment and fiber. i've seen fiber splicing trucks, vz and the contractors (LHC) trucks going by with fiber on them. have no idea where they could be. i never see them around on my off days on friday or through the weekend lol.

no idea about the trg deal.

Rock Branch/Poca is a Comcast Area, depending on where. The area then goes to suddenlink.

while the verizon trucks were all over... the suddenlink vans/trucks were concentrated heavily in the areas between the 35th street bridge and the bowling alley down past the kmart down there.

Thanks. I'll be in that area again Friday. The VZ CO is located in KC on 52nd Street and Venable Ave. I've been driving by sometimes when I can to see if there is any work going on in and around that area. If you are familiar, I am from CC ("the creek"), which is across the river from KC. That is our local CO, but we actually work off of a RT (located .5 mi. down the road). I am a little over 2 mi. up and the is another co around .2 mi. at point lick dr. above me that feeds on up the road. So, there is already aerial fiber installed on our poles. How would it work if they deployed fios? Could they use the existing once they get the optical equipment up and running inside the co?

Never now that Verizon has announced it wants to sell its WV access lines to Frontier.

Yeah, bad news. My contact told me yesterday that it could still go the other way and that there are other companies that may come along and do fiber. He said to wait for the details.

I believe it is Frontier that requested to be a part of the deal. The state would be their largest market if the deal goes through with the WV PSC. They will move in and have their regional headquarters here.

smith... already got fiber in swaths of WV (like here in Clay County). Confirmable by employees of Frontier (friends that work for them as the 'maintenance' crews/the ones that maintain the local CO).

however, it isn't fiber to the home (at least not yet). It's 3 strand fiber from the CO's out to the local 'hubs', then from there, it's copper to the home (though not the 'normal' POTS copper... it's thicker than usual line). I do apologize for calling it Fiber To The Home earlier... i was mistaken and when i talked to my friend about it that works for Frontier... he corrected me.

however, that isn't all of WV. But, before this was announced, I do know (from having worked as a contractor for Verizon and at other companies that were 'umbrella's' under verizon and friends that are contracters/regular employees), Verizon was already in the process of rolling out Fiber in the major metro areas to replace the old copper "trunk lines" (for lack of better words). Where they had service covered (especially the Kanawha Valley) and were in the process of replacing their Trunk lines out to the rural CO's to improve signal to offer basic DSL to the outlying rural areas. While I was working for some of these other ISP's (you'd be amazed at how many of the remaining dial-up companies in WV are all the same company.. lol), we always had issues with the southern coalfields and the poor lines there. We were VERY thankful once Verizon upgraded the main lines there to fiber (much better connections for our customers).... then not too thankful when they were selling 256/128 DSL for cheaper than we could offer dial-up...

Not gonna be Fiber to the home, but still, the 'main lines' will be/already are fiber.

i can't wait for the details and whats actually going to happen. if this goes through, maybe frontier would resell fios or fibernet would make more investments to bring fttp to the customers.

They won't have to "resell" what they already own Either they will choose to continue offering Internet (and hopefully TV) over fiber or they won't.

I think it's unlikely they will expand beyond any present franchise commitments made by Vz and very unlikely they will be able to continue offering TV over fiber after the first 12-18 months of acquisition. FTTH is not cheap which is part of the reason why Vz is willing to sell off these markets (even ones in OR/WA that are presumably profitable).

i'm expecting them to drop everything but internet/phone and that they will cut WAY back on the internet bandwidth, then raise the price and call it an improvement.

i was told 5 years by the tech who installed my service back in august. Of course that may change w/the new co. BTW tollhouse I only made it at TRG 2 months(I was in the 1st class in june 2008) I applaud you for making it that long!

i aksed my contact about vz keeping there most profitable areas and he said that without charleston/huntington, he doesn't think frontier would deal. he said that frontier has to 'sell' to them and that it won't happen overnight. we will have our chance to speak up in the psc meetings. he said they might still choose to do fiber here (like vz already had in mind), but if not they will still run fast data.

i found this article that was written sometime last year.

High tech businesses need ample broadband; cultivation of more New Economy businesses requires better broadband infrastructure.

"It took a while to build it, but we've completed the state’s biggest, fastest fiber optic Internet pipeline, offering customers a whopping 100 megabits of broadband," says Dave Armentrout, president and COO of FiberNet, a Charleston-based telecommunications firm.“ We’re especially happy about that because the service standard right now in West Virginia is 15 megabits.”

"FiberNet plans to take big broadband to 38 of West Virginia’s 55 county seats by 2011, which will make our state nearly 70% broadband capable," Armentrout says. "That will be greater than any other state's connectivity, and will achieve the company’s goal of making West Virginia’s broadband connectivity system the fastest on the East Coast.”

It looks like Verizon might be staying in West Virginia, or at least just in the most profitable areas like Charleston. They're going to have some tech position openings soon and will drop the ones they have coming in from out of state, so that tells me that something will be announced soon and they will stick around after all.
