| Problems with my Westell 6100...
Hello! I am using a Westell 6100 that I recieved from Verizon when I had their service in Texas, it's now on a Qwest line. Y'all were able to help me last year with the appropriate settings so I hope someone will be able to let me know how to deal with my current problem.
My connection is dropped so frequently that it is extremely frustrating. The longest it usually stays connected is an hour, but that's on a good day. Generally it drops about every 10-20 minutes. The modem usually reconnects itself but sometimes a reset is required. I have attached the diagnostic log in hopes that someone can tell me if my modem or the line is the problem...thanks! | | nwrickert sand groper Premium,MVM join:2004-09-04 Geneva, IL

| I am going to compare your statistics to mine. I am using a Westell 327w. And I'll concentrate on the downstream.
Your statistics (downstream):
Attenuation = 36.5, Margin = 14.0, Tx Power = 17.6 (13:45:21) Attenuation = 38.5, Margin = 14.0, Tx Power = 17.5 (13:49:02) Attenuation = 37.0, Margin = 12.0, Tx Power = 17.8 (13:49:41)
For comparison, my statistics (downstream):
Attenuation = 52.0, Margin = 12.0, Tx Power = 9.3
We both have a sync rate of 1536. My connection is stable - I have maintained the current connection since Jun 26th.
Comparing: My attenuation is worse than yours. Presumably you are closer to the telco facility. The margins are similar, and should be okay, but your upstream margin doesn't look as good as downstream.
The Tx power suggest a serious problem. Your power is a lot higher than mine. The power is typically increased to overcome noise on the line. With a lower attenuation, your Tx power should be lower than mine, but it is considerably higher. That suggests a noise problem on your line.
The variation in the attenuation over a short period of time, also troubles me. It makes me wonder whether there is a bad connection somewhere. Note that a bad connection could be generating noise.
If possible, do a NID test. This should help determine whether the problem is in your house wiring, or in the incoming line from the telco. -- AT&T dsl; Westell 327w modem/router; SuSE 10.1; firefox 2.0.0.14 | | bevills1

| reply to kerrywoods Is modem sync maintained, i.e. does modem internet light show solid green light? If not, then sync isn't being maintained which is most often a hardware issue in my experience. First make sure DSL filters are on all phone connections. Then try disconnecting all phone connections to jacks except the DSL line. If the problem disappears, then you might have either a bad DSL filter or bad phone jack. If that eliminates the problem, try replugging phone lines 1 at a time until problem recurs to determine which filter or jack it may be. Don't forget to check the phone line connection to alarm system if using an alarm system. This worked for me, and it turned out to be a bad phone jack in the kitchen in my case. | |
