[Connectivity] Lose sync when using 1 splitter?

I've been having problems since installing 1 splitter(for my tv) before the modem, was losing sync periodically for a couple weeks and about 12 hrs ago lost it completly and it never came back online, then when I removed the splitter it synced and is fine so far. Why would 1 splitter cause this? Here's my power for a 5120 modem if this helps:

Frequency 549000000 Hz
Signal to Noise Ratio 37 dB
QAM QAM256
Network Access Control Object ON
Power Level 5 dBmV

The Downstream Power Level reading is a snapshot taken at the time this page was requested. Please Reload/Refresh this Page for a new reading

Upstream Value
Channel ID 3
Frequency 34400000 Hz
Ranging Service ID 1403
Symbol Rate 2.560 Msym/s
Power Level 58 dBmV

Thanks for any help with this issue

The upstream power level of 58dBmV is too high I would have a tech bring you a new splitter or go to your local office and get a new one, whats the power level for the upstream without the splitter connected?

That's with the splitter removed, it won't even sync with it installed anymore about a week ago I do remember the signal being around 55 with it and 52 without.

Serveral possible causes, reguarless of what is putting you at 58 without the splitter, it's the issue.

You could have a bas section of cable, the plant [main feed of cable in your neighborhood area] could need to be swept by lineman, the fitting on a piece of cable could be bad/have suckout, the splitter on the side of your house [if there is one] could be bad, the modem could be dying, etc...

a. Call a tech.

B start trouble shooting yourself. you will need a pair of pliers, some extra cables, and to go swap out your modem at the cable store to do it yourself.

I do know there is a splitter on the outside of the house with 1 side for tv and the other for the modem. I'm gonna go out and check all the connections and see if it helps. Will post if there's any changes.

Thanks

definitely try CT3's two suggestions, but to answer your question it appears that when you add the splitter your up tx goes too high. it's probably less than that 58 without the splitter.

Well, just checked and there's 2 splitters outside. Tried just using 1 with just the modem hooked up to it and the signal dropped to 51db

Frequency 549000000 Hz
Signal to Noise Ratio 37 dB
QAM QAM256
Network Access Control Object ON
Power Level 4 dBmV

Upstream Value
Channel ID 3
Frequency 34400000 Hz
Ranging Service ID 1403
Symbol Rate 2.560 Msym/s
Power Level 51 dBmV

Ok, I just redid all the connections in the box outside and so far it stayed at 51db Is this an acceptable level?

thats what mine is at right now, 51dBmV is within range , I would stick with the way you have it now but like tshirt said, monitor it and call a tech out just to be safe, he will probably replace the outside splitters with fresh ones and check your line signal at the box outside.

It will work, but remember that signals change up and down a few points due to weather changes, and plant adjustments. if you notice trouble again, you'll probably have to have a tech visit anyway.
I'd watch (check 3 -4 times a day) the signal for a couple days.

I do have a truck setup for tomorrow but just want to make sure it's not "my" problem so I don't have to pay for the visit

I just put the splitter in after the modem for my bedroom tv and the signal went up to 54db so the splitter is costing me 3db's

3.5dB loss is typical

Ok, I'll keep an eye on it till tomorrow before cancelling the visit and see what happens, since I used to lose sync a few times a day I guess I'll know by tomorrow if it's gonna be ok or not.

Thanks for all the help

I'd keep the appointment unless it sudden gets much better on it's own (like stable a 45dB)
assuming you want to be able to keep your bedroom tv attached

Ok, I'll keep it and have them check it out. I would like to keep the bedroom tv w/o having to run a cable through the house(that's why I share it with the modem)

Thanks again.
