| mounting a tiny wireless router outside, couple Q's
I'm looking to improve wireless coverage in my backyard, and I'm thinking of mounting a tiny wireless router right under my eaves (it's an old la fonera router, running wrt-54g)
it's obviously not in an outdoor hardened case of any sort, so I'm wondering about what kind of case to stick it in?
summer temps aren't a concern, and in the winter, it won't be used so I'll just pull it down then.
other option might be to just mount it in a window well facing the back, but that puts it at ground level, rather than up high
thoughts? |

| Years ago, a friend of mine worked for a VERY low budget WISP...
They used to take plastic toolboxes, mount the routers / access points inside them then, drill holes for the Cat5 and power, then caulk it all closed... Not really nice to look at, but worked.

| reply to Tikker_LoS protecting it from the elements is the easy part, its the rapid temperature changes at night during summer and winter you have to worry about, in the summer you'll get condensation at dawn and in the winter you'll get rapid temperature drops at night causing bad expansion and contraction, i had a wireless adapter outside my window exposed to the elements for almost a year, it was protected from rain tho, except blowing rain, and it was fine, but a router has way more electrical parts in it and is way more fragile, adapters are sturdy tho so you might want to keep the router inside the window and put the adapter outside instead, some have very long cord and you can get extensions as well |
