Get a new Modem

@comcast.net

[Speed] I'm still using the Motorola 3100

In a nutshell, in 2001 I had broadband installed in the house. Years later, I'm still using the same modem At some point between now and then, the cable company said I owned that modem so now its mine. Yay.

So far its been pretty seamless, no complaints...but I'm wondering if there is no more room to grow.

I've been on the 6mbps down service for some time now...but I understand 8mbps is available in my area at a small fee, and I am tempted to upgrade. But I'm not sure this modem can handle the additional throughput.

I always get good throughput on the tests like Speedguide, and I seem to get sustained 6mbps speeds on downloads, will this modem handle the upgrade to 8mbps service?

For that matter is the upgrade to 8mbps from 6 really that noticible?

And lastly, is the modem they will replace it with (should I go with a new one rented from Comcast) going to be a drop-in replacement for what I have now? I VPN into work and have my modem in the basement with a single Ethernet run to where my router is on the next floor.

That modem will handle the 8 Mbit tier, but it won't support Powerboost on any tier, so you're already missing out on a substantial feature. I'd suggest buying or renting a newer modem (SB5120, SB5101, or either of the newer Linksys models are often recommended).

Way agree with Cabal!

That modem is a bit long in the tooth..

Still using 3100

@comcast.net
Thanks for the information everyone. I'm considering upping to the 8mbps tier and will probably replace the modem at that point.

I would replace the modem first, then see if you get PowerBoost and if it seems fast enough. Unless you are downloading a lot of large files, it may not be a noticeable difference. Not to mention there are often too many bottlenecks elsewhere that tend to make some of these fast speeds a bit of a joke, especially during the evenings.
