[TWC] TW SoCal roller coaster speeds...

Since TW took over from Adelphia I've had the Turbo Service and was waiting to get speeds in excess of this:

A few weeks ago, same Mac/D-Link setup, without re-booting the Ambit modem, I suddenly was getting this; thought I had died and went to heaven:

that lasted only for about a week until it went down to this:

But still an improvement and it seemed stable. Until today when there's some obvious outage somewhere in my area and the connection has been a consistent:

My question: is anybody in the 90212 area getting 15mb Turbo Service? And does anybody know what's happening with local outages? There's a red notation on the TW Status Page, for Beverly Hills dated 8/23/08! Thanks for any help or commiseration.

Re: [TWC] TW SoCal roller coaster speeds...

First speed test looks like a modem provisioned with 8000/512, which is Turbo speed in "non-upgraded" ex-Adelphia areas like Beverly Hills.

2nd speed test looks like a modem provisioned with 15000/2000, which is Turbo speed in certain markets.

3rd speed test is a modem provisioned with 10000/1000, which is normal Turbo speeds for most of SoCal

4th speed test is a result of today's outage affecting much of SoCal, especially ex-Adelphia areas.

Modem provisioning still shows 10000/1000 BUT - Van Nuys, CA DNS and DHCP servers were NOT prepared for the overnight speed upgrade and neither was the TWC staff - unfortunately, usual TWC fare. Upgrades began about midnight Pacific Time, July 20-21, 2008. They began rerouting everyone all over the place - didn't work. They're still at it. Be sure to ask for a credit and to give you the Turbo speeds for the "regular speed" rate - worked for me. Good luck. I spent over 4 hours one blustery day in June with TWC tech support just to get the upgrade to Turbo. Was switched to India, Philippines, Colorado Springs back to Philippines and finally back to Colorado Springs to get it sorted out. Then, they told me they were not doing the upgrade until July - at least I got a discount and a few free days. Hang in all - it's going to be a long night.

Yeah tell me about it. For most of the evening I was getting this;

then some time after midnight it went back to normal. This is getting really annoying.

You can. If there was indeed an UNSCHEDULED outage in your area, and you call TWC to complain about and wanting a discount for those days you did not have internet, you often get exactly that: You don't have to pay for 3 days or something along those lines. I have had a $5 discount (which would equal to about 2.5 days of internet) for a 4 hour outage once because I called.

If you don't call though, you get nothing.

Re: [TWC] TW SoCal roller coaster speeds UPDATE

Indeed. For yesterday's outage I called and said to the billing tech "have you ever heard of dslreports.com?" to which the person said "no I have not". We talked about the site a bit and I mentioned that some people on here had said that they weren't getting credits for yesterday's outage. I got one. Just gotta talk them into it.

Re: [TWC] TW SoCal roller coaster speeds UPDATE

I am in Arcadia and am experiencing the same thing. I upgraded to Turbo and am getting around 5000 kb DL and like 1500 kb UL. Most times it's around 2500 DL. When I upgraded the service I did not get a new modem. Sould I have? Also, what is modem provisioning and how can I check mine? Sorry for the newbie questions

This is what I got today. The UL is awesome but the DL is still half of what I am paying for.

Re: [TWC] TW SoCal roller coaster speeds UPDATE

This appears to be what my "normal" Turbo is for the moment. Just want to take a moment to thank all those who took time to respond to my original post. MacLeech: I, for one, do appreciate your contributions to the forum. There's comfort, no matter how small, in knowing there's at least one person inside TW who seems to care about their service and will put himself in the line of fire.

I'm using vista and it said it's not advisable to run the tweaks test.

Here is my latest:

This I can live with. It just seems to be so random. When I upgraded to Turbo should I have gotten a different modem? Right now I have the Motorola SB5101

The Moto 5101 will run Turbo just fine. Adelphia was using them for 16/2 without issue (if the firmware was higher then 1.1.1.1 some shipped with).

If you log into the the RR account management page, what Bandwidth class does it say you're configured with?

BTW, The tweaks page says "Vista TCP tuning (tweaking) is NOT advisable" but I'd still like to see the results of the test. It's the actual tweaking that's not advised, not the testing.

Re: [TWC] TW SoCal roller coaster speeds UPDATE

Mac,

First off, thank you for taking the time to help me. I really appreciate it. Here are the results of the tweak test:

1. Your Tweakable SettingsReceive Window (RWIN): 261340
Window Scaling: 2
Path MTU Discovery: ON
RFC1323 Window Scaling: ON
RFC1323 Time Stamping: OFF
Selective Acks: ON
MSS requested: 1460
TTL: unknown
TTL remaining: 111
TOS flags: none set

2. Test DownloadActual data bytes sent: 1024001
Actual data packets: 703
Max packet sent (MTU): 1500
Max packet recd (MTU): 1500
Retransmitted packets: 0
sacks you sent: 0
pushed data pkts: 107
data transmit time: 5.225 secs
our max idletime: 230.9 ms
transfer rate: 182165 bytes/sec
transfer rate: 1457 kbits/sec
transfer efficiency: 100%

3. ICMP (ping) check Target unpingable

If your IP could be pinged then we hit it with various streams to identify any loss, or exessive jitter from our server.

4. Notes and Recommendations Choose RWIN between 94900 and 251120 (FAQ #586)
Vista has no tunable TCP settings
Read the tweak FAQ

Observations:
Good data stream (no/few rexmits)

Observations:
Become pingable
if you need basic packet loss tests done
Check tweak FAQ

When I went to login to the RR Account Maintenance page the only option it gave me was to change password. I will try again later and let you know what my modem is provisioned for.

Thanks again!

Re: [TWC] TW SoCal roller coaster speeds UPDATE

The tweak test results are good. Nothing unusual.

Can you post a tracert to 209.244.0.3 ?

How are pings to your 2nd hop from that trace?

Run "ping -n 100 ip address" and post the final results please.

I think he means for you to tracert 209.244.0.3

THEN ping the 2nd hop that shows up in tracert. You should post this information so that he doesn't have to ask you for it then you have to wait more time before he can help you out.

I have been subscribing to the Business Home Pro 15/2 for $99/month for the last year in an ex comcast area, and haven't had a single problem - Always got 13-16mbps down and 1.8-2.1 up.

I moved to a new area (90042, ex Adelphia) and now I am topping out around 8mbps down, 1700kbps up, but still paying $99/mo. We have had 4 truck rolls, 3 modems, all new inside wiring and drop from the pole, and numerous calls from tech support and dispatch to get it sorted out, and nobody has been able to do a damn thing. The last tech, who was the supervisor, just told us to request a discount because they can't do anything.

Our download is averaging 5217kbps over the last 5 days, with a standard deviation of 2660kbps. High is 8199kbps, low is 1006kbps.

I have been having speed issues with time warner for the last week or so. I noticed it one evening as I was watching a Netflix on demand movie and it started stuttering before completely halting and when I tried to replay the movie it said my connection speed was too low. I laughed, then I remembered I have issues with them at least once every other month so I called and the techs had the usual song and dance with me on how it was my fault and something's changed on my end that they can't fix because they aren't responsible for my environmental changes but they'd send a tech out. I've lost several vacation days to the "techs" who come out wiggle a couple of wires, scratch their head and then don't have a clue what's wrong. Usually enough people complain that someone takes their thumb from up their butts long enough to fix the problem, but this time it seems I again was one of the first to report the issue and this weekend I still have the same issue so they don't seem inclined to fix it just yet. I have the 10/1 but the highest it's tested at today was 2/512 and the lowest would make dial-up laugh. I am starting to think I can live without internet at home. I've already disconnected the TV because I'd had several outages in the last couple of months in the rare event I wanted to watch HBO or Showtime and it made me appreciate the value netflix offers. I think that maybe we should just get dsl and pay for the Turtle level of service we getting instead of paying for the Hare and loosing the race to the Turtle.

Re: [TWC] TW SoCal roller coaster speeds...

Be careful, the grass isn't always greener. I switched to U-verse for more HD channels. I'm reasonably happy with that part, but the 10/1.5 U-verse internet ... ugh! It's been s-l-o-w during peak hours. I am definitely NOT feeling that "not sharing with your neighbor" consistency that telcos keep trying to shovel down your throat.

Things seem to have improved the last few days, hope they've fixed it, but it's really made me appreciate my consistent 10/1 connection from TWC.

I'm in Woodland Hills and the latency is driving me crazy. Called TW/RR and they told me it's an issue being reported widely in LA North, South and Central. No ETA on repair.
