new build problems with CPU

Click for full size

Hello,

I just recently built this system consisting of:

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor Model BX80570E8400

EVGA 132-CK-NF78-A1 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 780i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard

MSI N280GTX-T2D1G OC GeForce GTX 280 1GB 512-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16

OCZ StealthXStream OCZ600SXS 600W ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply

G.SKILL 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Desktop Memory Model F2-8500CL5S-1GBPK

I RMA'd back an asus p5q-e because another member on here has a similar setup as me and he was getting a way better benchmark on futuremark 06 than me. So I decided to get the same motherboard as him. Well I hooked up everything today and updated all the drivers and installed futuremark 06 ran the test and my score was a little over 600 points less than my previous set up. This threw me off so I started to dig a little bit deeper to figure out why this was happening. Well I installed cpuz and its stating my cpu is running at listed speeds below. I also noticed that it fluctuates to 3000mhz x 9. Whats the deal on that, do I have a defective cpu? Also my memory is ddr2 1066 and under the memory tab its at 400mhz. I would really appreciate it if someone could please help me out and walk me thru about how to fix this problem under bios I don't want to screw anything up, thanks again.

well I figured out that my memory was advertised at 1066 but it can't output it, my system crashes when I set the fsb too 1066. Right now its all 1033.

You dont have a defective cpu,it's called speedstep
If you need it to run 3ghz and above and not flactuate, you'd have to disable speedstep in the bios
I'm not sure if you tried overclocking it or not but you'd get better numbers oc'ing it a little bit

So basically this speedstep kicks in when the cpu load goes up? I'm going to go disable it but if that how the speedstep works I dont think it's going to affect my futuremark score at all because I'm sure its kicking in when I run the test. Thank you snake.

this is strange, speedstep was already disabled. What do you think it could be now?

Disable EIST and C1E. Perfectly normal for that CPU.
400MHZ RAM is actually 400x2 = 800. So your RAM is running at DDR2 800. You need to make it run at 533MHZ (1066 effective) by raising the divider - not the FSB.

PS: Your RAM is also in single channel mode, read your motherboard's manual again and make sure you put the RAM in their correct slots.

Dream Killer,

I was able to find and disable c1e only, looked everywhere for the eist. By disabling c1e my cpu is locked at 3000mhz and the multiplier is at 9. Also the ram is in the correct slots, I need to rma this memory because its not performing at what its advertised too.

As for the future mark test results whats the deal on that? I would've thought this mobos chipset would've atleast out down my previous mobo.

well for the ram you may have to set the voltage to the level needed for the ram to run at the proper speed and which in alot of times all has to bet set manually as mobo tend to default to lower voltage

Brand G.SKILL
Model F2-8500CL5S-1GBPK
Type 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM
Tech Spec
Capacity 1GB
Speed DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500)
Cas Latency 5
Timing 5-5-5-15
Voltage 2.0V - 2.1V
Heat Spreader Yes

and according to cpuz you are in single channel..with asus board it should be slots 1 and 3 or 2 and 4 for dual channel

I tried tweaking around with different settings even at the specified voltages I'm not able to get 1066. Right now It's at
1036 at 1.925 v
