Sometimes we do win and bad guys go to jail

Sometimes when I feel a need to remind myself that crime doesn't pay and hackers and other scum do on occasion get nice federal vacations I look over the Computer Crime & Intellectual Property Section web site from the United States Department of Justice

Its always nice to see scum like Adam Vitale (30 months and cough up $183,304), William Gary Sullivan (57 months and a $3.2 million in restitution) and many more get nice vacations for their dirtball actions.

The scary part of reading the site is more often then not the bad guy isn't a hacker but an employee gone bad. So as we have often said, the real threat is usually on the inside.

I actually hope the reality is that insiders are committing a higher percentage of the crimes. The alternative is that outsiders are committing more crimes, but are getting away with it. I can think of two possibilities to explain that: it's harder to get evidence on an outsider or they are hiding in countries that don't care.

Plus I don't worry too much about insiders on my home network.

It is kind of creepy to understand the prevalence of insider crimes and know there is a real possibility that someone you work with is up to no good. In my case that would probably mean someone selling trade secrets. How could people stoop so low? They imagine they are stealing from this big bad company, but they are stealing part of everyone's future that works at that company.

The sad part is that there are not enough zeroes behind any of those numbers...

Sometimes I must admit the system doesn't seem to make sense, kill someone get 18 months, hack their system get 30 months, guess which number I think is really screwed? Sometimes I think Judges are using random number generators to determine sentencing.

It seems North America is starting to follow the mantra of the rest of the world: "Life is cheap".

I saw this and I feel so sorry for the people he killed or injured(especially the kids), but I can't help but wonder if there is more to this story then what has been reported.
