| [Speed] Only getting 30-60% speed
Ok, so I'm paying for the lowest comcast HSI plan - 6mbit down, 1mbit up. Recently, I was at a friend's house who has the same plan and I noticed files would upload above 100KB/s, while at my house I'm lucky to hit 30KB/s.
According to speedtest.net and speakeasy, I'm only getting around 4.2mbit down and .3 mbit up. I called support and they said there was no problem on their end and sent out a tech. He was just here about a half hour ago, plugged in his little testing thing, said the signal was fine (I think it's a _bit_ low, I'll get to that in a bit), and proceeded to run some online tests. First he tried speakeasy...and got about the same results I did. He proceeded through about 4 different servers before going to disney.com to see how that loaded. He then asked what test I used, where I directed him to speedtest.net. After I taught him how to use it, he ran three tests on that, getting the same results. So then he finally found some crappy site that tests using 250k pages and only tests download speed, came up with 7Mbit, and essentially said 'everything's fine, you're just using crappy sites. Sign here please.' By the way, all this took about a half hour because this guy couldn't type and barely knew how to use a computer - at one point he even hit a google ad thinking it was part of the site.
So anyways, since he was useless, here's what _I've_ found: downstream speed: 4Mb/s - 5Mb/s upstream speed: 300Kb/s - 350Kb/s Trasmit level: 48.3 dBmV Receive level: -1.3 dBmV Modem: WebSTAR DPC2100R2 Hardware version: 2.0 Software version: v2.0.2r1256-060303
I've also tried both cable drops into my house (one for the internet, one split for TV - I tried that one at two separate locations) and got the same results each time. I even considered testing it out at the pole itself to completely remove any possibility that the problem was on my end, but I couldn't get the connector unscrewed. Anyways, anyone have any suggestions? |

| Comcast offers a 4mb plan to customers who do not subscribe to Comcast TV. Does that sound like you?
I think your signal levels look fine. -- CheckSite.us | YourIP.US |

| reply to Urza9814 No, we've got a bundle with our cable TV. That's interesting though, that plan doesn't appear to be listed on their website.
And yea, my signal levels seem ok, but from what I've read optimal levels are 0-2 for receive and under 50 for transmit, so our receive is a bit under that...but yes, I have read that they don't consider it a problem until receive is around -14, so I didn't really think that was the problem. |

@comcast.net | reply to Urza9814 Sorry about the double post, but I also wanted to add that the phone tech did confirm that those numbers are lower than they're supposed to be for our plan. |

| reply to Urza9814 Can you post an actual image of the speedtest result from www.speedtest.net?
Your signal levels are fine, so that's not what is causing the speed problems.
You could try getting another modem, just to make sure it isn't the modem. -- CheckSite.us | YourIP.US |

| reply to Urza9814 Yea, we were actually considering buying a modem and getting rid of this one we rent from comcast. I was kinda thinking it could be the problem...they've had to switch our modem several times already. The last time it was because every day, from around 5:00pm to around 8:00pm our internet would just die. This went on for about two weeks before I finally got a tech on the phone who said he thought someone might be stealing cable and sent someone out who ended up replacing our modem.
Anyways, here's my speedtest.net results:
If we do get a new modem, are there any you'd recommend? The ones we'd gotten from Comcast have all had problems. And they've all been Scientific Atlanta, so I've been thinking about avoiding that brand. Motorola seems to have some decent ones though. |

If you post your MAC ID #, maybe someone can just verify that you are provisioned correctly. -- CheckSite.us | YourIP.US |

You are provisioned for 4400 down and 384 up. You need to call Comcast and ask them to switch you to the correct rate code. |

| reply to Urza9814 Looks like you're on an old Adelphia plan that should be 6/1, but your modem has the standard config file instead of the silverpboost file. I'm in your market, and can try a couple things with it if you want, or you can just call back in and see if the rep can reprovision your modem. |

@comcast.net
| reply to Urza9814 Ah, thanks for all the help! Yea, we've had this service since it was Adelphia, so that's entirely possible I guess. That's basically what I thought was happening at first, but you'd think that'd be the first thing they'd look at when you call support. Anyways, I'll go call them again, see if I can't get this fixed. |

Here are the current signal levels (including SNR):
Downstream Receive: -1.5dBmV Upstream Transmit: 47.5dBmV Signal to Noise Ratio: 38.4dB
All are in range. The problem, as reported, is that the modem is still provisioned for 4/384 and needs to be updated with the correct config. A simple phone call should correct this. I am surprised that we did not catch this prior to sending out a tech.

But there you go again using the *unfair* advantage..
