| [motherboard] RAID Controller and USB Controller - Device Manage
Reinstalling Windows is just too much darn effort...
I have two "Other Devices" in my device manger that have yellow questions marks next to them.
Raid Controller and Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller
I built this computer years ago...I was way out of my league. How do I install these devices? And do I need to install them? Everything else seems to be working.
Thanks in advance! |

Generally, when you install Windows (any flavor) it will ask you if you want to install any SCSI, SATA, or RAID drivers as part of its initial query, and usually requires you press the [F6] key during the boot process to install drivers for such devices from a floppy disk. However, RAID controllers may have drivers that can be installed via a CD/DVD after the OS is installed. If your RAID controller is built-in to the MB, your should have a MB driver CD that came with the system, or with the MB. You can use the MB driver CD to install the missing drivers. This can usually be done either by running the installation utilities on the CD, or by using the Windows Hardware Wizard (Control Panel\ADD Hardware) to install the drivers.
If you don't have the drivers floppy or CD that came with your RAID controller (or MB), you can usually find them on-line. |

| reply to petermj If everything is working, then it likely isn't important, just an annoyance. However, with that said, the RAID drivers are likely onboard the MB (motherboard) or for an addon card. If they are part of the MB, and you aren't using RAID, the chipset can likely be disabled within the BIOS or via a jumper on the MB. It should be covered in the MB manual. If it's an addon card, and you don't need it, simply remove it. Otherwise you will need the board brand and model number, then you can get the drivers from the manufacturers website. The same applies for the USB controller (ie: MB or addon card).
Likely, both are on the MB and you simply haven't installed the MB drivers yet and simply allowed Windows to install what it could. In which case, you will need the MB brand and model, then simply get the latest drivers from the manufacturers website.
And this applies to ALL of your hardware, monitor(s), sound drivers, video drivers, etc. You should be finding and installing the latest drivers for all of your hardware. Windows only has basic and likely very outdated drivers. -- Google is your Friend |
