| [ Extreme] markham area slow speeds
Hi everyone,
I was wondering if anyone in the Markham area having extremely bad download speeds around peak hours (4pm-3am). I'm located around Kennedy and Steeles area and I have down speeds of 1 Mbps.
I have contacted Rogers several times since last year and they have done nothing.
Other than leaving Rogers, I feel that I am at a loss. I am also not in good terms with Bell either and I am very skeptical of small time internet providers. |

| I have cousins in Markham and they also complain about their rogers speed. From what I've read on the forums, the Rogers network is really congested in the Markham area and they have done little to fix the problem. You might want to try DSL if it is available in your area. |

xbox live etc.. can barely stay connected. I was wondering if it was my router. |

I'm going to give them a call and see what is going on.
My VOIP would jitter all over the place. I can hear the person fine but the can't hear me. |

| reply to mandel I called and did all the steps and then eventually decided to get the modem exchanged. I had the SB5100 and now I have the SB5101.
When i got home I had the same issues as before... it wouldn't even connect to either my pc or macbook through ethernet.
I put it back onto my router and wireless seems to work fine now. on my pc downnload speeds are fine, but only 400kbps upload?
on my macbook I get 200-300 kbps...
I still think something is wrong. |

| From what I understand (and someone please correct me if I'm wrong), your download speed is dependent on your upload speed since your upload is used for handshakes and confirming with the server that packets have been successfully received. Thus if you have non-existent upload, you'll have a low downloading speed. |

I would ask someone to check your upstream utilization for the area, this will require a TII tech, as the TI's don't have those tools available to them.
If you get a skilled tech on the phone, let them know straight away that your download speeds are fine, but your uploads are a little lower than normal, and you seem to be experiencing some strange packet loss issues, that should steer them the right way. |

BTW my area is 14th and Markham Rd. |

1 edit | reply to mandel Mandel; rockkozors; Jeff1462001; As you have said Rogers knows about the severe speed problems within the city of Markham; and after receiving years of complaints from its users they have chosen to do nothing but raise rates again and again.
As you have noticed; calling Rogers tech support leads you on the long road to no where. Even though you have a technician over who confirms the problem is congestion; youll find that Rogers closes your support ticket on the matter within a few days without any resolution.
Users here have talked with high level tech support staff and have gone through the office of the president with no luck in getting respectable speeds. I do know that some users were able to get some money taken off their bill; and one user got their high-speed account comp until the problem is fixed.

Congestion has been a problem in my area of Markham for the past 2-3 years. |

| I just upgraded my service from Extreme to Extreme + thinking that the download speeds would increase. WRONG!
I was getting around 8 mbps and I'm still getting the same with the new service. When I spoke with customer service they told me I should have downgraded the service to something less than Extreme (Extreme) as there must be congestion in my area.
And there is no DSL in my area.....
Funny how they have no issue charging you more (Extreme +) without even being able to give you something close to it. I wonder how many people in my area are overpaying for their service and simply don't know any better???
A also live in the Markham area (Major Mac and Warden) |

1 edit | Isnt it nice that Rogers will upgrade you to a higher package knowing full well that at no point in time will they be able to live up to the package's speed.
I live in 16th and Kennedy are, about 2-3km south east of your location. As with your area, DSL service is not available. My meter measures the distance to the Bell C.O. to be 6.5km, and there are no outside SLAM's for the area.
I think a lot of people over pay for their service in Markham because there is no DSL service available. Rogers has no competition, which would explain why they continue to ignore complaints and do nothing to offer adequate service. Even the new area's of Markham are congested.
Many people were upset when Rogers took over from Shaw in 2000 or 2001?. Within a year of the take over users also noticed their pings increase substantially, decreased download and upload speeds and had to endure those hour long waits for Rogers tech support. People also lost their Shaw Digital cable TV, a service Rogers took years to offer again.
I find it sad that 9 years ago for $39.95 we got faster internet then we do today for $20 more. Arn't most technologies doubling in speed ever 2 years, along with internet usage?? |

| reply to mandel yea im getting the issues agin even with the new modem.
computers having trouble to even connect to the internet.
This only started last week for me. Before I would even go as far as praising Rogers for the great speed. Maybe they finally reached the tipping point near 14th and markham rd.
It's not like it is slow speed, it's no speed! How can I make a living as a web designer with no internet. |

| Keep this in mind folks, if it's an area issue, sometimes it's not an "easy fix"... if the network needs to be re-routed, it takes time to adjust the routing.
If it's an issue to do with the signal levels, sometimes that involved taking the ENTIRE network in that area offline to fix the issue.
Either way, they usually won't go through the trouble if ONE person reports the issue, there has to be a good majority of the people reporting it so they can justify doing the work. |
