[crt/lcd] Reset video mode

I am setting up another PC and have this ATI Radeon card that I have been reluctant to use, due to past experiences with ATI but had no choice...

Anyway I downloaded and installed the latest Radeon drivers. ATI decided that the default screen resolution and refresh rate should be as high as possible right from the start, because everyone has a 1600x1400 120Hz monitor these days

So now all I get is a blank screen and monitor shutdown when Windows starts. I have tried safe mode but the ATI control center warns my that the driver currently in use (safe mode VGA driver) is not supported by ATI control center, so I can not change the settings.

Any ideas?

So you're saying that you can't even start in safe mode?

No I can start in safe mode and it comes up in the standard VGA 640x480 mode.

But I can not change the resolution or refresh rate in safe mode because the ATI video drivers are not loaded.

Crap like this is why I avoid ATI. But this card (Radeon 800XL) was free and so far worth every penny

I would unload the drivers in safe mode, reboot, clean all traces completely, reboot, then try different drivers.

If it was a LCD it is pretty much useless to set the refresh rate to 120 Hz and just blindly doing it without making sure everything supported states resolution - well - that is not a smart move.

Have you tried changing the resolution in the Display properties on Windows without going thru the ATI control center?

I agree...begin by uninstalling the drivers. There should be a driver cleaning tool on the ATI website.
