This is the first thing I would want to disable.
If you want FIOS but don't want that, could you instead just get a dumb, simple modem and hook it up to your PC (if you only have one) or your (main) router?

Nope. Modems won't do a thing on FiOS. If you want to use FiOS, either an Ethernet or MoCo enabled router.

When I said modem, I meant a "modem" like how a cable or DSL connection has one. They aren't really modems, as there's no analog/digital conversion, but they serve the same sort of purpose.

Are you saying that with FIOS there's no such thing?

Personally, I prefer to have the absolute simplest CPE possible, and just connect the CPE to my Linux router/server. Then I have the rest of my network behind that router.

I will always choose not to get the router from the ISP, since it reduces configuration needed to change to a different connection.

For example, if I wanted DSL instead all I have to do is get the DSL modem, and connect it to the designated WAN port on my router. After that all I'd have to do is switch the IP address on the WAN interface (I always get static IPs) and then I'm good to go.

Ultimately yes, there is no modem for FiOS. It goes Fiber right into your house, which hits an ONT which is like a modem, but not in the terms, and then the ONT either gives your router a connection via Ethernet or MoCa. You cannot take the ONT out of the equation what so ever, and if you want to replace it, you need to shell up a bit of money for one and you need to know how to install it properly, or Verizon will give you something such as a Tellabs or Motorola ONT. So ultimately, no modem, just router.

Also, unlike a modem most of the time, the ONT is a layer 2 device that cannot and does not respond to pings. All it does is convert light to digital data for the router to use. BUT, with FiOS, since the ONT gives your router ether Ethernet or MoCa data, if you are on Ethernet you could use Ethernet right to your PC from the ONT and either use a PPPoE dialer or simply let the PC get an IP since FiOS uses DHCP.

If you are in an MDU though, Verizon uses VDSL to service most people, unless it's new and they run ONTs to everyone and in that case, you can use any modem that does VDSL.

As a former fios rep, I suspect those must be fairly rare or only exist in the Northeast, as neither I nor any of my cow-irkers eever encountered a setup like that.

As a former fios rep, if by some twist of fate Verizon took over my area and offered fios I would order only internet and I'd insist upon a Cat 5 run to my router. Those actiontec M142s are crap. I'd even be willing to pay an extra, one-time fee for such an install. I'd also connect the BBU to a store-bought UPS so that it wouldn't switch off during a power glitch.
