decifal : What kills me is the very loose definition of Rural... IMO rural is where you can't even get cell service, dont see a neighbor if you drive one way for at least 1 minute... If this is you.. Your rural in my book.. However... I can freaking see towers and if I walk to my driveway, I can see the neighbors.. Granted, i'm sure they are wondering wtf i'm doing looking at them, but I can see them.. I just feel like they need to rip out the copper in some places and replace with updated fiber and be done with it.. Yes not always 1000000 percent profitable, but hell man quality is also important with a buisness as well as profit..... Least it should be.... I really do wish I had an independent Teleco company servicing my area instead of the death star.. least they tend to buildout their service areas....

anon : My son (Ranger_One) plays WoW with either WB or with Dialup depending on what he is doing. So it is not entirely impossible...just frustrating sometimes. Nothing like finding yourself in a sudden high Ping spike/lag during a battle...;)

Dialup provides lower ping and less lag because is allows higher packets either way. But you sacrifice speed which has it's own set of problems....especially when "a venturing" with a group.

Yeah, living in a rural area with no other options than satellite and/or dialup is a "pain". Especially when you see so many Cellphone Wireless towers around...but Wireless Internet services are not offered to you yet.

anon : there is nothing I can do as far as I know. I once tried to get a dsl service and it was just impossible. cable is WAY out of the question so I don't think I can do anything else, but oh well. I guess I can just suffer for now. in another year I'll be moving anyway lol.

Island Jeff : My believe is that as of 11/2006 wildblue made the decision to maintain advertised speeds for large file transfers at the expense of latency, so latency jumped from 600-700 to 1400+. I envision everyone's packets sitting in line in a router at the gateway waiting to squeeze into the line going over the satellite so traffic over the satellite is maximized in efficiency in terms of getting as much bandwidth as possible through the pipe.
--
Very happy TDS DSL user | Wildblue in Lake Michigan
