Everyone talks about unlocking a phone, few talk about unbranding. For the most part everyone takes the setups from the vendor and we grumble about the 'for pay' extra services the phone's menus have in the most inconvenient places.

ATT is certainly on this particular bandwagon, and as an example of how well they can cripple a phone to suit them, here is a list of what you can gain (and lose) when you unbrand a SonyEricsson z750A.

Now, there may be one hardware difference between the "a" and "i" models, and that is the second camera for video conferencing, I'm am not totally sure that the 2nd video chip is actually in there, so, video phone calling may be out, but if that is the case, then ATT ASKED for the chip to be removed, since the 'i' model certainly has it.

Here's a partial list of what you can gain:

1. Video phone calling - if there really is a second camera in the "A" and if you can get the streaming media settings correct and can get ATT to let you to subscribe to "Video Select"

2. GPS - I get accuracy to 10 meters, works best in car with charger attached, can drain battery in 2 hours or less. Must use app in firmware, newer Google won't work as well. Locator Services can be left active and minimized so that Google will immediately know where you are. But do it connected to a charger.

3. Blogging from camera as a 'send to blog' (Blogspot.com) uses email account and data plan.

4. RSS Desktop - has as many features as an iPhone's. Auto scroll, configurable updates

5. Podcasts (video and audio) I believe that it may be configurable by the rss feeds rather than the PC Suite sync method.

6. Exchange ActiveSync without any shortcomings (as have been reported elsewhere), specific Exchange sync.

7. SyncML for everything else. There are reports of it working with MyLife.

8. Email push client - works with ANY pop or imap server, and can filter out unwanted domains, etc from the 'push'

9. Network Sharing function, phone can be part of office network via USB or Bluetooth

10. Choice between 'GSM & 3G' vs 'GSM' only is now unblocked, fixing the battery life issues. Even in combined mode, if the phone isn't updating it will drop down to GSM/Edge when not actually using the web.

11. FOTA (Firmware Over The Air) updates

12. You won't accidentally open a internet browser when pressing the central button, it's a Message Center button now. Other buttons and shortcuts are also rearranged.

Here's what you will lose:

1. Move all ATT applications that you like to your memory card prior to flashing, and remove the card. You *may* save those that you like, such as My-Cast. Anything stored on the memory card will be wiped in a flash.

2. TV Streaming, XM Radio. The phone doesn't report what ATT thinks it should when accessing MediaNet's main page. Some items are missing. This could be do to several things
a. We're not accessing the right media net pages
b. The phone's report of it being a z750i from the browser
c. The XML file in the phone that has various descriptors about the phone, including web pages, model etc. Since I will have access to another one of these phones in a couple weeks, I'll copy the XML file from that phone over to see what (if any) differences occur.

3. MediaMall won't let you buy anything including ringtones.

Is this about a unbranded phone not tied to a provider? I have one of those pretty nice can do things like have no Operator logo, turn off shutter sound and a host of other features.

This DE-Branded vs Un-Locked. I'm tied to ATT. The phone just has the firmware/software that the mfgr created for it without the ATT logo'd specific stuff.

I can turn off the shutter sound too, there are other things that I didn't mention, but I covered what I thought were important reasons to change. Frankly I don't understand why anyone would want to remove the shutter sound, unless they wish to take clandestine photos somewhere. In Japan, it's illegal to remove the sound.

From what I have read and experienced I am of the belief that video calling requires a network service to be run by the carrier. AT&T does not provide any such service and therefore it is impossible to make or receive video calls.

If I try to make a video call with my Nokia N-95 I get an error reporting something along the lines of 'Unable to make video call, not supported by other phone or network'.

If you find out a way to make video calls on AT&T, PLEASE post it on this forum.

peace,

Video calling requires an add-on package that ATT calls "Video Share" the service is supposed to be orderable online, however, if it doesn't think your phone supports it, it won't show it. I don't know what a N95 would show as available services on ATT.

Did you ever tell them you have one? I know that when they were Cingular they would help configure non-ATT phones with the better techs.....

As for me, I just want to find out what the Media Streaming settings are, so I can get the TV stuff back.

Thank you for the suggestion but Video Share is not the same thing as video calling. Video calling would be a two way video conferencing system. Video Share is really nothing more than sending videos while you are engaged in a call.

BTW
CingularVideo (or AT&T Video if they call it that now) does not work on my N95 either and AT&T has been less than helpful with regards to that.
