stev32k : There still seems to be some confusion about the DX crop factor vs FX or full frame 24 X 36mm. It's important to remember that the crop factor is just a "crop factor" it is not an increase in magnification. A 100mm lens on say the D300 gives the same magnification as it does on the full frame D700.

The "crop factor" really relates to the sensor size not to magnification. The nominal area of the FX sensor is 864 sq mm (24mm X 36mm=864 sq mm), the DX sensor is 1.5X smaller or 576 sq mm.

If you enlarge both to a 4 X 6 (101.6mm X 152.4mm = 15,483 sq mm) print you will have enlarged the FX shot by a factor of 18, and the DX print by a factor of 27. That is where the 1.5 crop factor comes from.

So one does not loose the crop factor when moving from DX to an FX sensor. The full frame shot has more image on the sensor because of the larger size. If you want to get more apparent magnification from a full frame shot just crop out the additional area and enlarge. That is what happens when shooting with a DX sensor - you have less image area enlarged which gives the impression of greater magnification.

KyleC : I have had the D700 for over a week now, and I have used it during 2 weddings for over 1500 frames. Overall its a great camera, but I am not sure if its right for me. I am hard on my gear and have the highest standards, even the little things annoy me.

Positives:
• D3 quality in a small body, files look identical.
• solid build quality vs 5d and d200/300. (other than CF door and pop up flash, I hate them both)
• shutter is quieter than d3.
• Battery life really surprised me, better than d200.

Negatives:
• the auto focus is not as confident in very dark situations.
• focus points are very bright, and non-adjustable, it causes glare on the mirror when they are activated.
• body size doesn't feel as good in my hand, its just not balanced with anything less than a wide or mid zoom. Feels awkward to me with anything 70-200mm or larger. I HAVE to use two hands with anything but a light weight wide zoom or fixed. (I know you are saying "who cares, use two hands dummy" but I do some one handed shooting while hand holding an off camera flash.)
• pop up flash is loose on the top, I taped it down, pops up when the button is slightly bumped which happens allot when a camera is hanging on your shoulder.
• I really miss the exposure indicator in the viewfinder and the back info display (I am trying to train myself to use the info button on the back to see iso and other settings at a glance, but that is slow going).
• RAWs are not compatible with anything but NX2 for right now. This is really the most annoying thing, but its partially my fault for early adopting, partially Nikon's for being greedy and not sharing pre-release info to other vendors.

Most of these negatives can be put in perspective by looking at the price difference between these two bodies. Its still an amazing camera, but the best can be had for $1700 more.

I sold my second one to my friend who came from a d300 and he loves it. His favorite thing, other than the low noise, is the fact that its full frame.

I don't think I will be keeping this one much past when/if Nikon releases a d3x. I may get more used to the size and change my mind, but after using full size bodies for 9 years, I am more accustomed to the feel and balance they provide.

Files:
Crop mode DX D3 vs D700 (you will need nx2 to open the d700 files or change the exif to d3):
»tinyurl.com/5uctj7
d700 wedding raws (exif says d3 so you can import to anything that can read a D3 raw):
»tinyurl.com/5omjww
--
|::| My DSLR Gallery |::| PhotoBlog |::| Website |::|

<TABLE WIDTH=95% align=center border=0 CELLPADDING=4">

side by side d700-d3

d700 wedding image (ignore the d3 marker, the exif was hacked to import into Aperture)

D2x and D2h For Sale!!!!!!!
