| Convert variable bit rate mp3s to constant bit rate mp3s
Is there any software that'll let me convert variable bit rate mp3s to constant bit rate mp3s. I've got a few mp3s in variable bit rate, and they sound pretty odd. They sound like someone turns the volume up and down when they play back. So I'm thinking of converting them to constant bit rate ones. Is there a software that'll let me do this. Thanks |

Get the Lame encoder and put it in the mp3DirectCut folder:

| reply to Nordy When you re-encode an mp3, obviously the quality could only get worse. You can't replace anything that's missing. You can only compress the file further, causing more audible artifacts. You can't get rid of any artifacts caused by a compression process. What's gone or altered is gone or altered for good. You can only add more artifacts through further processing and make things worse.
Variable bitrate should sound better, but there are some really horrible mp3 converters out there people use. The speed of conversion is often faster, but the quality can be very bad. I've even heard differences at the same bitrates depending on what front-end I use for LAME. I won't even bother downloading anything that's not FLAC lossless these days. Too many horrible-sounding mp3s out there. |

| I've been kind of out of the loop with the current crop of MP3 players but are there any that play uncompressed .wav files? With the huge capacities of these units these days, I'd think that'd be the best option for the cleanest sound. -- N.Y. Giants - Super Bowl XLII Champions |

| reply to Nordy My Sansa E270 will play FLAC or WAV with the Rockbox firmware installed. You can get a 6GB refurb for under $50.00 and add a microSD card or cards for more storage. »www.froobi.com/SanDisk-Sansa-e27···282.html
This is my first mp3 player with video, but it seems pretty nice to me. I didn't really even need an mp3 player, but the price came down so much on these I couldn't resist. I've been having a lot of fun loading it up and the sound seems pretty good. I can SERIOUSLY jam without the cops coming now... lol. No problems with it, except that the ear buds didn't stay in my ears very well with the foam covers on them and they sounded pretty bright without the covers. I bought a pair of the earbuds with the silicone ear pieces you jam in your ears and I like them better.
Mp3 files sound excellent on it, as long as I convert them myself at 256 kbps or more using LAME and a good front end. I don't mess with other people's crappy sounding mp3 conversions. |
