| 54G 1.x-es Maxed Out With Mach 20?
I've had RCN cablemodem for years, with stellar service. I recently reorganized my package, getting their "Mach 20," I guess. In any case, SE's NYC and DSLR's "NJ" speedtest show the expected 2MBPS up, which is of course sweet. The clinker is that the download speeds haven't gone up much from the solid 6.4 I've enjoyed for years.
I have two Linky 54Gs, a 1.0 and a 1.1 (not many lightning strikes in Manhattan). Both run oldish versions of HyperWRT/Tibor. They're super-solid, and I'm reluctant to change that.
Oh, did I say I run 98% of the time with the radio off? 11G in NYC is often not worth the trouble - just too much interference.
All my machines give the same speed - Win, Xandros, OS X.
A couple of years ago, I returned my rented RCA 350 and put in a Tosh 2500 cablemodem. I got about a 10% speed boost in DL from that, from 5.5 to 6.0.
Do these old 54Gs have enough CPU to give more? Should I at least TRY direct connect? (Gulp, have to make that firewall hot.) |

My interpretation would be "older WRT54Gs" -- We can never have enough of nature. We need to witness our own limits transgressed, and some life pasturing freely where we never wander. Test your firewall. |

| reply to fhaber Only way to know for sure is try a direct connection. If you have XP the XP firewall should be enough if turned on with no exceptions to stop incoming. Plus do not have to do it permanently just some short speedtest tries. May be the router may even need a different firmware. To many rules or SPI may slow the firmware down. |
