But yet Sprint has the most roaming areas and the most spotty service if you look at each provider's coverage maps.

It's about spectrum- Sprint has nearly all of their CDMA on the PCS spectrum band, which requires more towers than the cellular bands favored by Verizon Wireless and at&t. (Nextel uses bands nearby the cellular bands)
