| There may be software that can make a wireless device act as an AP. But without that, and more commonly, you can do it using ad-hoc mode for wireless (instead of the usual infrastructure mode).
You would need to enable ICS for whatever on your desktop connects to the internet (ethernet if to a router or modem router or on PPPoE if the desktop uses a bridge modem). If you set up the wireless device on the desktop to ad-hoc mode it should get assigned 192.168.0.1 IP automatically by ICS (no gateway needed on that desktop interface). What I don't remember is whether your laptop would get an IP automatically, or if you have to manually assign it an IP in 192.168.0.x network, netmask 255.255.255.0, gateway 192.168.0.1 (which should be auto IP of desktop wireless) and DNS servers at your ISP. |

Personally I think your better served purchasing a wireless router. -- "When all else fails, read the instructions..." MS-MVP Windows Desktop User Experience |
