| from dynamic to static ip
hi,
my friend toled me that it's possible to change my dynamic wan ip to a static wan ip, but i don't know how this would be possible, because i tought isp's could only change this.
he said he used a wireless router to do it, but he can't describe how he does it succesfully.
so i'm asking this to you, who might explain it in details how this is done. |

| Technically, all you have to do is assign yourself a static IP using the dynamic IP that your ISP gave you - using the gateway and subnet information provided from their DHCP server.
The problem is that, if their DHCP server assigns you a new IP, but you're using the old IP assigned as a static IP, you will lose Internet connection until you switch back to DHCP. -- CheckSite.us | YourIP.US |

@euphonynet.be | my isp disconnects me evry 36h and gives me a new wan ip, but is there any way to prevent them from doing this or getting the same ip back? |

| Completely up to the ISP providing the IP's. You could try calling them and see if they will do that but I am betting they will either try and sell you a static IP (they have the DHCP server assign the same IP and charge you at least $5 for that) or they won't change the settings for you... |

@euphonynet.be | i already called them and they don't offer static ip's.
was rob posting about internal or external ip? if external how do i do it? |

@euphonynet.be | there has to be someway, a friend can change his ip and still keep it for weeks and i don't see him lying to me. |

Only way your friend could be doing it is for his LAN IP which is a different IP than the one provided by the ISP. |

@euphonynet.be | dyndns.org doesn't make ur wan ip static or longer to keep, it's just for ppl who are setting up a server/site with a dyanmic ip. |

| If you want to statically program the dynamic IP that your ISPee gave you then you need to look in the router for the numbers, write them down and then re-program the router as static instead of DHCP. Check the router user manual for details on how to program your specific model. When the internet stops working just repeat the process. -- I spent most of my money on Women and Beer, and the rest I just wasted ! |

| reply to Benjaminfiltjens Your friend is mistaken. Check with him again and ensure he's talking about the WAN IP. If he insists it is the WAN IP, have him give you details and post them here for a sanity check.
I'm not holding my breath as it can't be done without your ISP's involvement. |

Most ISP's sell static IP upgrades for about $2/mo. In lieu of this, you can use DNYDNS.org to keep a symbolic name like myplace.homeip.net matching the non-static (changing now and then) address from your ISP. This is good enough to run a home webserver or webcam. |
