Unless you are using a web server or some such at home, you don't NEED a static WAN IP address. Most ISP's sell static IP upgrades for about $2/mo. In lieu of this, you can use DNYDNS.org to keep a symbolic name like myplace.homeip.net matching the non-static (changing now and then) address from your ISP. Check the router user manual for details on how to program your specific model. When the internet stops working just repeat the process.

The problem is that, if their DHCP server assigns you a new IP, but you're using the old IP assigned as a static IP, you will lose Internet connection until you switch back to DHCP.
