[Speed] max out 16Mbps connection

So, the only way I seem to max out my comcast boost 16MB connection is via newsgroups. I consistently get a speed of 2000 k (2000x8-16MB in newsleecher but various speed tests do not even close. I've even tried to duplicate the speed I get w/ newsgroups by downloading something directly from the microsoft downloads page, to no avail. Should I trust newsgroups dl's as a semi-accurate gauge of my true dl speed? Just curious, hope someone can help. Thanks

5 DivX videos downloading in Flashget with DU Meter showing 17.3mbps
dl.tv - »dl.tv/
... has a pretty fast pipe.
Several of us here like to start a few of the videos downloading and look at a bandwidth meter - DU Meter or Netmeter(free).

»www.dumeter.com/ - Pay

»www.metal-machine.de/readerror/ - Free

I pull 17.3mbps after PowerBoost.

thanx. Whar type of app is flashget, btw? I'm not familiar...

I imagine the newsgroup dl speed is accurate, though. Prior to upgrading to 16Mbps, my average newsgroup dl rate was 1000KB/s. Makes sense, right?

1.9.6

Download manager/accelerator. Each file you start in Flashget tries several(5-6) connections to the server.

Usually, if the server allows multiple connections, the download(s) will fly.

I start a few because the first one finishes pretty quick and I/we want to see what it will do sustained after PowerBoost runs out.
Blast is provisioned at 17.6mbps(17600kbps?) so I can live with getting 17.3mbps... ya know?

cool. I will give the combo of flashget and dumeter a shot. I also think that adding a router to the mix, slowed down my connection a bit. Prior to adding the router I would pull 3000KB (24MB) during powerboosts and then it would drop down to 16MB. Now, I pull a little over 16MB during powerboost and it drops down to 13-14 MB. Any settings within the routers firmware I can tweak to resolve this issue? I would love to disconnect the router during hefty downloads, but with comcast one can only use one mac addr at a time. If I disconnect the router, my modem won't work hardwired unless I give tech support a call and they reset it on their end.

Reset

You can actually reboot that modem yourself, you don't need to call them. If you have just a regular modem you can just unplug the power cord for a few seconds, if however you have the CDV service you will have an eMTA. To reset this just press the reset button found beside the ethernet cable a pen usually works best.

thanx. I didn't know a soft reset on my end would solve the problem. Any thoughts on the speed loss after adding a router to the mix. I can understand laptop being slow due to it connecting wirelessly, but my hardwired pc has seemed to slow down a bit.

Whatever it's worth here, I, personally, would wait at least a minute or two..

pretty amazing dl speed dano, even after power boost. One thing I don't fully understand though. Why can't you max out your connnection simply by downloading one file (from dl.tv)? I'm only able to max out by downlading several clips, as in dadkins example.

At one point, you could. Back when PowerBoost was enabled or being tested here, I was lucky enough to have what was deemed "PermaBoost".
As in, PowerBoost that didn't run out.
I pulled single files at 3500+KB/sec.

Since then, it appears they have rate-limited their server(s).
So, we can still pull max speed using ~5 connections per file and several files all at the same time.

For now, it is the preferred speed test for many of us.
I can rather consistently pull my max from them using 4-5 files and Flashget.

thanks for the speedy reply. Is there an option to change the connections per file in flashget or is 5 just the default?

You can also use Free Download Manager (»www.freedownloadmanager.org/) if the limit on flash get is too low for you. FDM has a limit of 20 per server, although it also has a limit of how small a piece can be (I don't remember what the lower limit is).
This a snap shot of FDM on Blast dling XP-SP3 with the limit set at 16 pieces: »/speak/slidesh···UlQ1NEdM

I can't even find where to change the connection per server setting in "options", only allowd me to alter the max simulataneous jobs (1-8). Can one not dl one file but connect multiple times to the server and downloads bits at a time. Maybe I'm just a smidgen confused?

Go ahead and set it to 8. That way you can do 8 files at one time. That'll really max out your connection.

As for connecting mutiple times on one file, that's what the 5/5 (An example) that you see on the side of the file you're downloading is for. The more users you get, the faster it goes.

For example, I was downloading an E3 file at Gamespot the other day and near the end, it hit 20/5 and the file really sped up. There's no actual number of users you can set that I'm await of.

Hope this helps

understood. So, you can't really change that setting at all. When downloading something from a commercial site are you really getting it from multiple users, like a bittorrent app?

No, it will usually connect as many times as the server will allow per item.

All one server, just getting 5(?) parts of the same file at the same time = faster.

gotcha. One last thing, I keep reading that flashget installs adware. What's the real deal?

This? Turn it off... I do! ;-)
I have ALOT of adware/spyware scanners(odd hobby, don't ask) - none have ever hit on anything that can be related to Flashget.

Where are you seeing this?

our fine friends at wikipedia:

Privacy concerns
FlashGet installs adware along with the download manager the user has requested. These components cannot be deselected during the install, and the privacy policy of the adware providers is not disclosed to users

Going to re-download it. Also, thought it was restricting me from downloading files from sendspace, mediafire, etc.... Got a weird pop-up windown that kind of just stayed there frozen. Will it interfere with those sites?

What are the best options to choose in the setup wizard. I remember one check box asking if it should mazimize your internet connection? What exactly does the prog do?

Definitely don't want to use it as my bit-torrent client but somehow utorrent was removed as my default utorrent client and flashget took over.
