[ps3] PS3 Wireless problems?

I've connected my PS3 to the net by wireless. When connected by wireless, my downloads are pathetically slow. 1.5Mbits or less and nowhere near by 8.88 plus Powerboost that my connection is capable. But when I put a Cat 5 cable into it, I get full speeds.

How do I setup the wireless on the PS3 to get the full speed my connection is capable of?

I've got 2 PS3's, and had one wired, and one wireless. The wireless unit, even on the same home network was always significantly slower to download or interact with the store. Now both are wired, due to a wiring upgrade I recently performed. The result, is much better interaction on-line. It could be my configuration, and your configuration, 2 problems don't make a trend.

However, I'd suggest if you can, considering hard wiring your PS3.

Yes, indeed. While I'm searching for a solution to this. I have the same problem as you. I will be using wired connections on my gaming setups.

Thanks for the answer.

Already Set as Nat: Type 2, wireless is still dog slow.

Any other ideas to try?

My PS3's went from reporting my router as NAT3 to reporting it as NAT2 after the most recent firmware upgrade. I've disabled PnP. My direct experience with 2 PS3's, one wired the other wireless was that the wireless (which was close to the router, within 20' and only 1 wall) was significantly slower when browsing the on-line store, or downloading. After the slow PS3 was switched to hardwire, it sped up and now matches it's twin.

My router is a Linksys WRT54GL with the last Thibor firmware. As I needed to re-wire for a DirecTV installation, everything is now hardwired except the iphone, PSP's and DS's. Wired Cat5e is so much easier, no signal strength issues, plug it in and then go full speed.

There's a thread about setting up ps3 wireless on ps3forums.com but I can't seem to find it.

How do you know its going slow? There is no speed indicator while downloading off PSN.

Have you done a Google search?

Edit: Found this: »ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=74303

Try giving that a read.

See if you can't find the link to that thread. I'd be grateful.

As for how I know it's going slow, I did a update out the box and it took an insanely long amount of time, whereas it should've been done in 5 minutes, not the 30+ I waited.

Also, I've done PSN downloads and those were insanely slow.

I clocked them with the status bar for the download and BW monitoring software on my router that tracks any activity and at what speed it comes in at.

I tried a cat 5 cable and boom, speeds shot up. Instead of the 1500 and less I was getting, I get 8800+ now.

While I'm awaiting the arrival of my cables, I thought I might try fixing the wireless problems I'm having. Without much success so far either.

I don't get why I can't get at least 2000 out of my connection wirelessly when doing any kind of PS3 download.

A laptop on my network (Wireless G) gets the same 8.88 as my desktop (Wired) Why can't the PS3 do the same when my router is set to G only?

Yes, I've done a Google search, but without much success. The one topic that was helpful produced no effect as I was already setup that way and still had the problem.

EDIT: Reading the link and haven't found anything thus far. I'm already type 2.

I don't know where you got that from, I'm on wireless on both my PS3 and computer, and I get full speeds of my Comcast line.

I was thinking a bit about this, maybe interference from other 2.4Ghz appliances? I know going wired greatly improved my PS3 performance vs wireless.

Wireless still isn't as fast as a wired connection.

Chris here has 8mbps download and 2mbps upload.
802.11g can certainly do that with room to spare...

Last Result:
Download Speed: 16988 kbps (2123.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 3159 kbps (394.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 27 ms

This is my wireless.
While one can obviously attain higher LAN speeds via ethernet, wireless can handle anything Chris is provisioned for.
Wireless *IS* Full Duplex... got Skype?

Hope this clears up some of the misinformation in this thread

A simple illustration of a half-duplex communication system.

A simple illustration of a full-duplex communication system.

no it's half duplex by design

HomePlug AV(full-duplex) is cool
works well in most houses 50mbps(full-duplex)real life speed
works with anything that has an Ethernet card

Antenna diversity is why some routers have an

TX Antenna
and
RX Antenna

So, you are saying that when I transfer anything over wireless that I can only do it one way at a time?

"A half-duplex system provides for communication in both directions, but only one direction at a time (not simultaneously). Typically, once a party begins receiving a signal, it must wait for the transmitter to stop transmitting, before replying."

Ok... what is happening in this picture?

Ok, explain how a cordless phone works in Full Duplex with a single antenna.

No, I think you are mistaking MIMO(Multiple In, Multiple Out) routers.

IEEE says 802.11g is half duplex radio

why do you think that there is no setting for duplex

Full Duplex means you can talk and I hear you *AND* I can talk and you can hear me *AT THE SAME TIME*, right?

Do you have Skype? I will be glad to demonstrate for you.
See also the image above where I am sending and recieving at the same time(15mbps down, 3mbps up) - they call that Duplex.

"A full-duplex, or sometimes double-duplex system allows communication in both directions, and unlike half-duplex, allows this to happen simultaneously. Land-line telephone networks are full-duplex since they allow both callers to speak and be heard at the same time. A good analogy for a full-duplex system would be a two-lane road with one lane for each direction."

Explain cordless phones.
Explain Skype.
You can't.

As per the explanation, with Half Duplex - one has to finish before the other starts... not so with wireless. Sorry!
