Re: Slow and lossy. Anyone else?

I have 768/128 service.

Attainable line rate : 3120 kbit/sec
Attainable Atm rate : 2432 kbit/sec
Used line rate : 1100 kbit/sec
Fast used Atm rate : 0 kbit/sec
Interleaved used Atm rate : 768 kbits/sec
Rel. capacity occupation : 35
Noise Margin : 19 dB
Line attenuation : 53 dB
Output Power : 18 dBm

Nothing wrong with these stats, it's huge packet loss upstream.

Re: Slow and lossy. Anyone else?

But a noisy line might not completely kill your sync...Which modem?

Re: Slow and lossy. Anyone else?

Alcatel STH. There is no loss of sync.

Please look at the line quality test and tell me how and why 20% packet loss in a Bellsouth router isn't the problem.

Everything seems 5x5 in Davie with some pretty sustained upstream traffic.

Can anyone explain what this 65.14.x.x address is before my location? Could it be the card in the ONU?

After seeing my two line monitoring results, is this something that I should call in to ATT, and if so, how would you explain the results of the test?

Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

Re: Slow and lossy. Anyone else?

65.14.x.x is your first hop.

I'm not going to call them about this, as it has been my experience that the people you get to talk to are completely clueless about things like this and can't or won't escalate the problem to those who can fix it.

Provide the URL of the test results to whoever you talk to. Let them look at it and figure it out for themselves.
Good luck, and let us know if you get any action.

Re: Slow and lossy. Anyone else?

I decided to email the DSL Support Team instead of calling. I added the results of the test and the url to the email.

My DSL has been rock solid for years and this is the first issue that will not seem to resolve itself.

I did pull my line stats from both the modem and at the NID. They seem good to me:

SN Margin 22.0
Line Attenuation 5.5

I was browsing through some line tests for other Bellsouth users and they all seem to be having issues like you at 65.83.238.x.

I will let you know how things pan out.

Well, maybe if you call it in, they'll fix it for us. Or should I ring Cheryl up and ask? LOL.

She has more connections and numbers in her little black book on that side of the house than I do. BTW she sits across the hall from me in Jacko so if you want me to I can ask her to in the AM.

I doubt she has the numbers. The one she might have was disconnected years ago.

Re: Slow and lossy. Anyone else?

Looks like just about anyone down here who tries this sees this. It's impacting my speed, which is already slow enough being on Lite. Are you losing speed too?

Maybe a little bit. I just ran some speed tests as well as reliable download locations and it seems a tad slower. I have 3 Mbps service here and it's probably more forgiving, or tolerable, than your lite service.

Haven't had any effect on speed page loads etc. seem fine but I will temper that statement by saying on downloads they just stop pause for 10 to 15 seconds and them resume quite annoying and dial-up like.

I wonder if there isn't something we could do collectively to get their attention.

I just ran another test because the service has gone to a crawl, most of the time..

»/linequality/6···/2412957

I know they're busy with other things, but perhaps there is a corporate office somewhere where we can get their attention.

Re: Slow and lossy. Anyone else?

Well, as you know they don't read here anymore. And the last time I contacted support on the phone with what, to me, was an easier problem, I got nowhere fast.

And it was clear to me they were not interested in helping me. I can tolerate that for my paltry $10/month so long as it works. But lately, it's hosed and I can get six months of cable net service for not much more. My next phone bill is coming soon and I will be making major changes anyway. Dropping DSL could be one of them.

Funny, I was one of the first in 2000 to get DSL when it came to my area. It was quite flaky then..email problems...newsgroups, if you could call it that and so on. A few years back when Comcast came around, I switched and when it worked, it worked well. They had a few major crashes and as soon as dry loop came about, I switched from Comcast. Got 3Mb extreme. I would like to keep DSL, as I feel that during the hurricane times, they will stay up longer than Comcast, and with my 3rd party VOIP and hefty UPS support, I might maintain my phone service.

If, however, they don't get the show on the road soon, I'll have to take my chances and go back with Comcast, or perhaps Atlantic Broadband, if they win the contract for our condo development.
The costs with Comcast were the same as I am paying with DSL, but they gave me twice the speed. The newsgroup limits are of no consequence.

Re: Slow and lossy. Anyone else?

I'm entering my tenth year on DSL. Started with the only one in it, Bellsouth, but bailed as soon as competition arrived.

Back with Bellsouth now because the best of the competition is all gone and Bellsouth has $10 DSL Lite thru 2009.

I can get done what I need to get done on the ten hours a month of free dialup from Netzero. Internet is just no longer all that important to me.

As you know what counts is how the network is is being powered after a hurricane. Above is a comparison of two different providers’ methods of achieving that goal.

Now you can decide.

»/linequality/nil/2416301

Splitpair, do you have any advice on how to get this escalated or what to say while on the line with the help desk support team?

I can't seem to be able to explain to the helpdesk that the problem is not with my equipment, rather its the gateway located at the ONU or DSLAM (I'm assuming based on the first hop issue).

Please PM or reply if you have any tips.

Back when Katrina hit my latency to dallas servers went from ~30-40ms to 60-70ms. A month or so later it went back down, only to go back up a week later and stay the same. Oddly enough there are a few servers in dallas that I still get that 30-40ms ping to.
