Air-Internet in Pahrump

This is my first post to DSL Reports. I am new to Pahrump, and to Air-Internet fixed wireless. For the most part, I've been very happy with them. The service can't be beat! As of this morning, my speed test showed 21 times faster than a 56k modem. I don't know much about wireless, so dial-up is all I can compare it to. A few days ago, my speeds were as low as 4 times as fast as a 56k modem. If anyone else is using Air-internet, I'd like more info. on what type of tweaking they have done.
Thanks!

What method of upload do you use?

Looking at the air-internet home page FAQ....

You have an IEEE 802.11 wireless Ethernet service. Unless you did something to your computer to change the settings, if you once had higher speed and now don't it is not a tweak problem. You should check, since it is easier to check than the next step....

The FAQ states that for service you need

quote:
A. 1.) A true line-of-sight to any one of our many antennas, unobstructed by trees or any other structure.
If anyone erected anything in your LOS it would impact your service. (And that is from my 34-year-old microwave learning, not from anything recent.) I'm thinking standing by the antenna and using a telescope to look for new construction.

As much as I hate to send people away, since this forum needs all the help it can get; there is a wireless forum that might give you better answers.

I'd say the likely reason for her speed drop was 1) Temporary obstruction or 2) Server testing/difficulties/upgrade. She experienced the speed drop a few days ago, so it seems to have resolved itself. Pahrump is small enough where you could probably call your ISP and actually talk to someone about what happened... Then again, this IS an isp so they probably wouldn't tell you. Have you run tweaktest II yet? It's in the DSLR tools.

Thank you both for your replies!
I have used the Tweak Tester II, and it comes up with all smiles (most of the time). I have also checked the wireless group, but since I didn't know (until now) that I had IEEE 802.11 Wireless Ethernet service I didn't know if that information applied to me. I'll go back to that group and see if they can help with any other questions that I have.
I guess what is really confusing to me, is that the speed test here can say that I have a good speed (between 12 and 16 times as fast as 56k), but the pages still seem to load slow. I use Excite as my home page, and it takes anywhere from 15 to 25 seconds to load. There seems to be quite a few that are that slow, but then other pages load pretty fast.
Thank you again!

There are a lot of thing that will contribute to slow surfing, other than a slow line

-- very high latency (if it takes a quarter of a second for a reply to come back from a packet sent to a server, that server will appear slow.)
-- Slow server.
-- Slow DNS servers
-- Slow links. (Many sites reference other sites on their pages. The requires your browser to query the DNS server for an address to match the name, and then to go to that site to get whatever bit was asked for. If the site referred to is down then you will have a long hand until the browser gives up on that link.)

Air-Internet finally registered here. They have a forum and so I will
go to that forum and see what's up.
