| Help: CD drive doesn't work
 fig. 1 | fig. 2 |
Ever since I did a restore on my computer, my CD drive doesn't work...The lights flash when I put a CD in but, it won't read/write it.
Computer HP Pavilion a210n (about 5 yrs old)
CD drive: Lite-on LTR 48246S (fig. 1)
I've gone to the Lite-on website and downloaded thedriver for it, thinking that my driver was old, and it gives me an error when I try and open the driver file. (fig. 2)
(edit) to change BMP to JPEG |

The file you have there that you are trying to run is a firmware update for the drive. This is not the same as a driver. You shouldn't need to do either.
As for why the drive is not working;
Have you tried multiple known working CD's? You may be using a disc the drive does not like.
Is there background software that is drive related such as Roxio which is running and conflicting with the read process?
Does the drive work in another computer?
The problem with doing the OEM related restores is that it includes all the BS the OEM likes to bundle in. Meaning software that could be causing issues. |

| Here's my processes that are running, I'm not real familiar with them so if you see anything, let me know.
I've tried many different cd's, the latest being the installation cd that came with a new hardrive today(that's going to be a different topic when I switch that out)... |

| reply to cjski A few things. First, try removing/deleting the IDE channels. Control Panel / System / Hardware / Device Manager / IDE AT/ATAPI Controllers / delete the Primary and Secondary IDE Channels, then reboot. Windows should automatically reinstall the IDE channel drivers and scan for attached hardware. If that doesn't work (or even if it does), you should check the HP website for any updated drivers for your system. -- Google is your Friend |

| reply to cjski Okay, deleted the IDE controllers...still don't work.
You know how when you stick a cd in the drive the drive flashes while it starts to initialize, and then it starts flashing quicker...? well mine sarts flashing, but it never gets to the quicker flashing.
Any other duggestions? I'd like to get this working before I swap out hardrives, because I havew to load the Western Digital program cd. |

I've tried everything...the latest was to go to the HP website and do a live chat with a tech. He had me do some stuff, and after everything, he came to the conclusion that my cd drive needs to be replaced. |

| reply to cjski Since the drive appears to be properly recognized by Windows, I suspect the drive has failed. Especially if it displays the same symptoms with numerous discs. You can get a new DVD burner shipped for less than $40. -- Google is your Friend |

Although dvd drives are certainly cheap enough, and can fail at a moment's notice, that this happened only after doing a restore makes that questionable (but still not impossible). Frankly, I can pop over to Walmart and buy a DVD writer cheap enough...if it does not work either, then I'd simply return it, knowing that it wasn't the hardware...or of course, if you have either a spare drive hanging around, or another box to try the Lite-on in, go that route. -- ...something is happening here but you don't know what it is...do you, Mr. Jones? |
