[Vista] Issues with USB device drivers resolved.

Let me start by stating I'm very new to Vista, I've only been playing around in it since 6/15/08. I received a free copy of Vista Ultimate for beta testing about a year ago and because I had such an old PC, it didn't perform well so I put the disc on the shelf. I recently purchased a Dell Inspiron 1525 Special Edition that came with Vista Home pre-installed, so I pulled the copy of Ultimate and installed it.

While I was, for the most part, happy with it, I had issues with it finding device drivers for my Sony 1 GB memory stick, an Imation 1GB flash drive, a Lexar 4 GB JumpDrive FireFly and my Logitec Harmony 550 universal remote control. Each time I would insert any of the devices Vista would search for the drivers and fail. Only the Lexar drive worked w/o installing any driver, but still showed problems when viewed in device manager.

Long story short, I contacted Microsoft for assistance and after the first hour and a fifteen minutes on the phone, I was again ready to give up. But last night I received a scheduled call back and within fifteen minutes, two of the problems were resolved and I just completed fixing the problem with the remote a few minutes ago. And I'm confident the same method will work for the Imation flash drive that I unfortunately, left at my office Friday.

Even though I tried to use device manager to install the drivers and browsed to C:\Windows and had checked the box to include subfolders, the drivers were not located. Last night a fine gentleman in India by the name of Ching, actually his name is much longer but he shortened it for my benefit, manually entered the following directory and achieved success.

C:\Windows\Winsxs

He told me if I encountered future issues and was not successful, to try this directory as well.

C:\windows\system32\Driverstore\Filerepository

I don't understand why I had failed, even though I checked the box to include subfolders, but I'm still happy it worked. The intent of this post is to help others avoid the frustration I experienced in the process of resolving these issues.

I searched this forum as well as the entire site both when I first experienced this problem and before making this post, I hope it's not repost of the same information.

Cheers!
