| I have had a negative experience with GWI from the start.
I live in Bangor and am supposedly 18,000 feet away from the nearest CO. However, when I call Fairpoint, they say I am around 4,000 feet away from the nearest CO. Midmaine has told me the same thing.
I had originally signed up for 5000/1000, yet since my service started, it was only at 2300/400. This is allegedly due to the fact that I am 18,000 feet away from the nearest station. I live on the edge of downtown Bangor, and know exactly where the nearest CO is. The modem I have from GWI, is less reliable than the one I have from Verizon that according to the date of Manufacture, is 1 month newer than the Westell 2100 POS i have from GWI.
I was lied to about having modems in stock when I signed up for my service, I was lied to by 'Rick' about how I had talked to him the night before and he claimed I had not. 'Rick' screwed up the link to my modem when he made a rate adjustment. I have been told many things by many different people why my service SUCKS. Bad lines, bad wiring, bad splitter, bad NIC, etc. I know they are all lies. I don't know what is going on at GWI, I just know that it is a company full of compulsive LIARS. Either they are slowly going out of business, or create crappy connections to save money. Either way, I've had it with them |

Hello have you checked the items,to be sure? also I do not believe you will get the full 5000, but you should be better. Run a speed test and list results also can you run a trace route and post. Hope you get it up to speed. Bruce |

| reply to jdw1981 So basically the only problem is you aren't getting fill speed. How old is the wiring in your house? When is the last time you reinstalled Windows/ whatever OS you use?
I'd recommend backing up everything and reinstalling your OS, or trying a different computer. Have fun going back with Fairpoint. |

1 edit | reply to jdw1981 Have you asked what your sync rate is set to? It sounds like you were set up on some older equipment. I know they used to have service that only gave you around 2Mbps speed. It might be worth asking if you are on the older equipment. I had this service a few years ago, and this is what it sounds like the issue is. If you are on the older equipment, it might be worth seeing if they can change your line to the newer equipment, which can handle service up to 20Mbps.
Hopefully this helps. I'm not quite sure if this is the issue, but it sounds like it. Did you have faster service from Verizon? If so, that's another clue to allude to the issue. |

join:2008-05-01 | reply to jdw1981 I am on the Westell 2000. I just signed up late March, so I think those are what they are sending. The 2000 worked fine on the 5/1 plan.
They wouldn't upgrade me unless I signed up for 10/1+. |

| reply to jdw1981 I have checked all the things that GWI has told me in my many conversations with them. The CO that is 18,000 feet away is and has been for quite some time CLOSED. I checked service without the splitter, and it was marginally better, and I do mean marginally. I got a speed bump from 1900 to 1930. Old wiring wasn't the problem either, because I tried that with no positive outcome.
The 6100 I have from Verizon gets about 10% better download speed than the 2100 from GWI and 500% better upload speeds.
Don't get me wrong, Fairpoint is the reason I switched to GWI. I knew they (Fairpoint) would be incompetent from the start and they were. They can't even route 911 calls correctly!!!
If I don't get consistent results and answers from GWI, I'll just switch to Midmaine. I had wanted higher speed around the 5 Mbps range, but am so far disappointed with this experience. |

| reply to jdw1981 First off, call GWI right away and speak to the billing department, ask to be downgraded to the 3/768 plan. A few hours later, call and ask to be upgraded to the 5/1 plan. Be sure to do a speedtest while you are the 3/768 plan.
Have you tried asking for a GWI rep to be dispatched to your house? Try calling and asking for that. |

| reply to jdw1981 Have you had any luck getting your speed up? I use my own modem and it helps plus you can see your line stats. If you still are having trouble email and ask them to send you your line stats and that should show you if you can get the speed( rec, level, snr, etc.). One of the best reasons to get a modem is they hide the setting from you in the cripple one they send out. I wish you luck tho I think you will be unsuccessful in trying. Bruce |

| reply to jdw1981 I just got off the phone with a level 2 tech. He was VERY knowledgeable. Apparently there is a hard ground that is present even at the NID. They are going to have 'UN'Fairpoint come and do tests from there part of the NID. I wish all the other techs were as consistent as this guy was, and I wouldn't be so frustrated. |

| reply to jdw1981 jdw1981,
I am glad to hear you have received the support you were looking for. Getting you to that point a little faster would have been ideal, but at least you have a ticket open with us now and are on the path to faster speeds.
BOGBS was correct. You were on older equipment and the level 2 tech you spoke to and who is handling your ticket has a change order in progress to move you to faster/newer equipment that is capable of higher tiered services. The old Verizon data we had for your loop was showing you at 18,000ft which was why you were placed on older equipment. Longer loop customers are placed on this equipment since they cant receive higher tiered services. I'm glad we have that cleared up for you and hopefully we can make you less frustrated.
In the future and this goes for everyone else as well. If you don't feel you are receiving the answers you are looking for. Please feel free to ask to speak to a level 2 technician. Our level 2 technicians are seasoned support techs with years of experience. They can answer just about any service related question you can throw at them.
