 | Bandwidth Throttling?? I know only a few people frequent this forum, but has anyone experienced any suspected bandwidth throttling??
My primary concern is Netflix.com streaming movies. During my first week with my FTTH 11Mbps connection, I experienced no difficulty in watching any movie I chose (generally 1-2 per night for a week). But after 7 days of enjoying movies (I had no TV or other entertainment at the time), I suddenly couldn't even watch movies I had previously watched in the highest quality that previous week. I have read some testimonials about the spotty quality of service provided by Netflix.com servers, but the specifics and timing of my case seems to support my theory of throttling by my ISP servers.
I have read the HT Terms of Service, and it appears that HT only commits to throttling Usenet Newsgroups at their discretion [Clauses 4.8, 10.1, and App.B 3] (which would answer Anonymous user 'Coffee Addict's question a few posts down in this forum). The only other clause that applies, IMO, is Appendix B (Acceptable Use Policy) 3(n) which prohibits using the Service "to generate excessive amounts (as determined by Hawaiian Telcom in its sole discretion) of Internet traffic..."
IMO the whole point of getting HSI at the highest tier is to support services exemplified by Netflix.com and others. I know other mainland TelCom companies even offer their own IP TV services utilizing the high bandwidth FTTH they are providing.
Well, I appreciate anyone who reads this and offers their thoughts. Maybe HTDSLGuy is still out there somewhere and can assist in shedding light on the situation. |

1 edit | I know this not relevant to the topic at hand and nit picking. But the 11Mbps DSL service is not a Fiber to the Home connection. It is still using the twisted pair copper between the central office and CPE. A FTTH connection is like Verizon's FIOS service on the mainland. |

 | Hijacking my own thread...
Having discussed it with many people, including the technicians who installed my services, I firmly believe that HawaiianTel is building FTTH into these new houses on Ford Island and in limited places elsewhere. In fact, there is a UPS inside my switchbox in the garage, expressly to provide power to the phone in the case of a power outage. If I had traditional twisted pair copper, I believe this UPS wouldn't be necessary because of the traditional architecture in which the regional substations house giant UPS facilities to supply the neighborhoods their low level power over the POTS.
I know it is hard to believe, but, like I said, I am pretty certain that these new homes are getting FTTH.
Now... about that throttling issue?? |

1 edit | I spoke to a tech at HT who I deal with whenever I have a issue. She told me that HT does not throttle speeds. That being said she couldn't conclusively say why this is occurring without knowing more about the specific circumstances with the account. |

| reply to Nuked01 I've noticed periods of slowness with Netflix but it has been sporadic and often coincides with other brief slowness. Most of the time, I get max traffic from Netflix. Of course, my max is only 3mbps.
I'm not sure what excessive traffic would be with HT. I'm not a truly heavy user and consume, on average, 30-50GB per month total. I think my max has been roughly 100GB. I've never heard a peep out of GTE, Verizon or HT regarding this.
WRT Usenet, I probably still have access to the Verizon groups... there was a screwup with my accounts when the great migration occurred. (It still worked a few months ago). -- My Site |
