It's there way to make sure you just don't up and cancel on them or fail to pay your bill. Since I believe comcast doesn't lock people in with contracts.

That is the point of the deposit. To prevent people from signing up; getting the Wii; and then immediately canceling. The credit check is to see if they will be able to pay for the Preferred service.
