Here's info I got from someone else.
There are 8 spices
Cardamon
Mace
Pepper
Cinnamon
Tumeric
Ginger
Cloves
Nutmeg
When you have all 8 you ( "Set Sail" Menu on Left) to Maricaibo, it will give you a rubber ball.
When you get the rubber ball then you take it to Antiqua ("Set Sail again) to trade it for rubber armour.
Rubber Armour cladding increases your hull strength by 125%, it will go away if you get a new ship.
