| Setting Up DVD Recorder
I have a sony dvd recorder with a hdmi output. It is connected to a Sharp hi def 720p LCD tv with two hdmi inputs. The tv is connected to a hi def dvr cable box. The problem i am having is that dvds that i record in widescreen do not play back in widescreen. I get black bars top and bottom and the picture does not appear to be upconverted to 1080i. What is the fix for this? -- "It's a nice day if you wake up in Disneyland" |

Via composite cables.(L,R, Video) The model is RDR-VX560. No component or hdmi INPUTS. There is an S-Video input. -- "It's a nice day if you wake up in Disneyland" |

Your right. I missed that. He states he is not seeing it in 1080. I would say he is not using an HD DVD recorder. Or it is not an upconverter. And if you have a 720 set why are you asking to see it in 1080? -- "The American Indians found out what happens when you don't control immigration." |

| reply to NYR11 Hi, this is actually NYR11's son, I think I can expand on what the actual problem is.
When I play a DVD, one I burned from the computer or one bought from the store, it plays perfectly, in widescreen, upconverted, on the 2nd HDMI input (input 4 is the cable box, input 5 is the DVD player connected with an HDMI cable).
The problem is recording a DVD. When recording something in widescreen, I actually get gray bars on the top and bottom of the picture, it squishes the widescreen vertically. So when I go to play the DVD, it shows up just like that on input 5 (set to "full screen"), but on input 1 (which the DVD recorder/player is connected to through audio/video cables) if I select "zoom" on the view mode it will fit the screen perfectly, which is fine, but it is not upconverted to HD like it would be on input 5 with HDMI.
So my question is, how do I get it to record in widescreen without the gray bars? Is this possible at all? and, is it recording from input 1 or input 5? The DVD player is set to 16:9, I actually tried recording in both 16:9 and 4:3 and it does the same exact thing. |

| reply to NYR11 Yes, I realize that, but that isn't the issue. I would be perfectly fine with just 16:9, because the DVD player I am using, when connected with an HDMI cable, upconverts to HD. The problem is that I cannot record in 16:9 without having the vertical bars. |

| reply to NYR11 Here is the real source of NYR11's problem. The signal that is being fed to the DVD recorder from the cable box is via the composite video (yellow) cable. Even though it is a HiDef cable box the signal over the composite will not be. Now I know that HiDef and aspect ratio are not the same thing and do not depend on each other. However when a program that plays out of the cable box displaying 16x9 is recorded from the composite feed the rcording will be in a letterbox format. No way around it it is just the nature of the beast. I would assume you would get the same result if you recorded to tape side of the unit. Give it a try just for snicks. |
