Re: What's really killing the land-line phone business - GREED.

said by Mr Matt:

If the local telephone companies eliminated the crap charges like the $6.50 central office connection charge they might have a chance of keeping customers. My local telephone company representative advised me that the cost for a basic plain old telephone service line without features or long distance would cost $12.95 per month. The TELCO Representative did not disclose the crap charges which added about $12.42 per month for an actual total cost of $25.37 per month. The TELCO morons still think they are the only game in town for voice communication. If the telephone companies eliminated these undisclosed charges they might have a chance of keeping subscribers.
Most of those extra charges are gov't mandated taxes. Thank your local and federal officials.

The most egregious is the $6.50 Central Office Connection Charge which Embarq calls Interstate Access Surcharge, a charge that is not mandated by the government. The total mandated charges are $5.92. The Interstate Access Surcharge is a continuation of the Customer Access Line Charge which the telephone companies will not let go of.

Actually, they aren't. Only taxes really are. The USF is mandated but that ridiculous $6.50 charge goes right to Bell. 911 charge goes to Bell too. Ever see a $6.50 "connection" charge on cell bill? No. Bell even has a $.50 Hurricane Cost Recovery Fee. They are insured so what the hell do they need that crap for? That $.50 cost BellSouth $70 a month. It was the last straw. I never regretted switching to Cox. Cox has the $6.50 only and not the other crap except taxes. I am ready to go all cell again. If VZ keeps most of Alltel's stuff, I will. Plus, my cell is used far more than my landline ever is.
