Re: Save Taxpayers From Government said by marigolds:Iowa forbids the expenditure of tax money on utilities. The funds come from other government run utilities (almost always electric or phone, occasionally gas and water). I would imagine then that funds are siphoned off from these utilities to subsidize the broadband. -- This isn't fair! I was only supposed to hate just ONE presidential candidate! |

Citizens are free to bail. Don't want to be on the hook? Move. You don't have a right to live anywhere you want and get the government you want in spite of what a majority of your fellow citizens may want. So where is it written that the government is expected to provide broadband?
Sadly, we see in many major cities, like Philadelphia, needed services like police and schools are sacrificed to pay for municipal broadband.
But in that situation, just about everyone who cared has moved out. -- This isn't fair! I was only supposed to hate just ONE presidential candidate! |

 | Philly didnt spend a dime on that network. Earthlink did. They were even paying the city. The new company has now taken over and will keep paying the city or be forced to sell again. |

| reply to pnh102 why should you be surprised on why it wasnt advertised here? Karl only posts the negs about Muni and about companies. Not the positive. But if it is positive he always puts "as i noted" or something along those lines about something going wrong such as FairPoint and 911. He still is going on about that.

I would imagine then that funds are siphoned off from these utilities to subsidize the broadband. Not directly. The utilities are forbidden from cross-subsidization. They are subsidized indirectly though. The utilities are funded by revenue bonds, but the revenue bonds are partially backed by the credit of the other utilities. As well, the utilities likely share upper level management and maintenance staff. This actually saves money for both utilities though. So, since this could affect the bond rating of the other utility, they might pay more interest on their own existing bonds. Of course, if your electric or phone utility is not in debt, then there is not even indirect funding. The revenue bonds are not financially backed by the other utilities, so if the broadband utility fails then the electric or phone utility takes a rating hit but nothing else. -- ISCABBS - the oldest and largest BBS on the Internet telnet://bbs.iscabbs.com Professional Geographer Geographic Information Science researcher |

That would be like arguing that the city has spent millions of dollars on Comcast's network because the city IT staff has to maintain the city intranet that connects to Comcast's network for internet access. -- ISCABBS - the oldest and largest BBS on the Internet telnet://bbs.iscabbs.com Professional Geographer Geographic Information Science researcher |

The whole premise was that the Philadelphia Wifi network would not cost taxpayers anything. The taxpayers spent $220K (and possibly more). Therefore, the city wasted money that could better be spent elsewhere.
Crime is once again out of control in the city. Perhaps the city should hire more cops instead. -- This isn't fair! I was only supposed to hate just ONE presidential candidate! |

So, you admit then that the entire IT infrastructure of Philadelphia was technically "spent on the network" by your criteria? No. I know that all governments have IT expenses, but like any expense, these should be kept to a minimum so that the government can focus on doing what it needs to be doing instead. Spending money on an unneeded wifi network, especially when so many other city services are lacking, shows that the government needs to re-examine its priorities. -- This isn't fair! Which would then mean that Philadelphia has then spent millions of dollars on Comcast's network? |
