| The Article about U-Verse is accurate ... U-Verse, by it's very nature, is bandwidth limited. You could almost go as far as to say It's virtually obsolete right now as it's being deployed.... and it's definitely going to create new headaches down the road.
It's going to be interesting, to say the least, how at&t fairs over the next few years against against DBS TV, and Cable's TV and broadband offerings, as well as FIOS in some areas and Muni efforts in others.
I suspect at&t strategy may pay money now but cost them in the long run.

Internet "max" speeds are currently 10/1.5 regardless of what you do with your TVs. The profile is 2HD/2SD, you can't dynamically pick and choose more SD than HD from moment to moment.
Just a small amount of additional bandwith will go a long way. Currently they are operating at a 25/2 profile. If they can bump up to 38mbps, they can offer 4HD and 15mbps internet. I'm about 2700 feet away from the RG, not too far from the 3000 foot designed limit and I show a max capacity of 48mbps. They are discussing pair bonding also which would mean 50mbps per home, which they can do a lot with.
I also think it would behoove them to actually do the "mixed use" that this article mentions. I'd be happy to have my internet burst to 20mbps when my HD streams aren't in use. For the most part, I only need all of them during primetime hours anyway.
Make no mistake, I think AT&T grossly underestimated people's HD needs. Squeezing their HD feeds down to 5.5mbps to make the 2HD profile work seems like a desperate measure. Surprisingly, it doesn't look that bad to me; I expected much worse. Go MPEG-4! And their design allows an essentially limitless number of HD channels.
For all of its shortcomings, the product is priced competitively. I'm getting a lot more than I was from Time Warner for a similar price.
