Gigaset SE567 Wireless Problem

I have DSL service provided by Frontier out of Kingman, AZ.

My Siemens Speedstream 6520 combo router/dsl/wireless AP failed and was replaced with a Siemens Gigaset SE567 which also provides these functions. DSL and wireless/wired network are up and running as expected, with my laptop, desktop and HP printer all working via either wireless or wired connections to the SE567.

One problem remains and that is connecting to the wireless network with my iPAQ 111 PDA. This unit worked just fine with my old Speedstream 6520. And it always connects to the wireless network OK after a reboot/startup of the SE567. Indeed, I can connect using either unsecure, WEP or WPA connections and performance is just as good or better than the old 6520. BUT:

When I end the connection and then attempt to reconnect the connection fails (doesn't matter whether I have an open network or use WEP/WPA encryption - none will connect).

The only "fix" so far is to reboot the SE567, after which, the iPAQ 111 will again hook up just fine. Go Figure!

I have reported this problem to both Frontier and HP. They just point the finger at each other.

TIA for any assistance you can provide.

Roy

The cause is probably the iPAQ 111 PDA not sending the "Disconnect" signal. But if anything, it could be either device since the SpeedStream should be seeing that the device is off the network despite a lack of a disconnect message, and yeah. See what you can get Frontier and HP to do.

Thanks for the response!

I've done a little poking around on the SE567 and it looks like I can change it to just a dsl-modem by switching port 4 to WLAN mode (and turning off the wireless). I'm not sure this will work so if anyone has a "better recipe" for converting the SE567 to modem only mode please let me know. [Unfortunately, the documentation I have found so far is minimal. Also, Frontier has "customized" this SE567 with their own firmware so options/setup pages reported as available by other SE567/ISP users don't seem to work with my Frontier version.]

If I can succeed with turning the SE567 into a modem only, I will just add a good wireless router to my network and once again be able to connect with the iPAQ 111. Any recommendations for a wireless router?

Thanks again for the response.

Roy

I believe guypd »/profile/1550036 stated that he knows how to bridge Frontier's modems so that you can put your own router in the equation. Shoot him a PM or he should see this and post up the instructions here if it can be done.

You'll want to go to the ISP settings, and click on advanced settings.
Edit the AVC that is already set up on there. Click to the next menu, until you get to the choice for a bridge connection.
I wouldn't change any other settings on the menus, except to change it over to a bridge.
That is what worked for me.

Thanks for the Info.

I noted that there were two "bridge" choices:

"Bridge only"

"with PPPoE Bridge"

I assume "Bridge only" is the correct one?

Yes, that is the one that I chose and it worked fine for me.

Note: If any one would like to verify this, the SE567 should also work like the 5200, 4200 and 6520 in that they all by default are in Bridge Mode and Router Mode at the same time.

In other words, you should be able to Factory Reset the unit and then leave the SE567 unconfigured (blank, no username or password entered). Then setup your Router behind the unconfigured SE567 with only your Username/Password using a PPPoE connection type. If your Router has optional settings for Host Name, Domain Name and/or Service name those should be left blank or at their Factory Default values. If there is an "always on" option that should be check active.

Isn't Routed Bridge a bad thing to do if you are hosting things like servers or need port forwarding though? Or is that to an advantage? I've honestly never routed bridged my Westell 6100 modem Verizon provided me.

Thanks guypd for the info about the Gigaset SE567.
I bridged the default setting and now I use my belkin to handle the dhcp and port forwarding. Works great!

Never heard of it so I'd say it is not a factor. There is Bridge Mode or Router Mode, and there is the Default Bridge-Router Mode since there are two devices in the case. One being the ADSL Modem and the other being a E2E Router. If you reset a Siemens/SpeedStream Gigaset SE567 unit and leave the Router part unconfigured, then it acts as a DSL Bridge Modem only. I don't think Westell offers that as it seems to be a SpeedStream / Efficient / Siemens / Gigaset feature.

Might be. Out of the box, and on hard resets (holding the reset button until it reboots twice) it will turn on the Westell's built in DHCP server and router, and will then ask me to set up a connection for the DSL to connect when I log into it. If I wanted to bridge my Westell, I'd need to shut off VC mode first by moving it to bridge, and then I'd need to shut off the modem's DHCP and routing abilities so that I don't route bridge.

Hi Doctor Olds

Sorry my resonse is slow - been on vacation.

I believe you are correct. To get my SE567 and TRENDnet TEW-432BRP router working together, I just turned off wireless on the SE567 and plugged port 1 on the SE567 into the WAN port on the TEW-432BRP. (Of course the TEW-432BRP had to be setup for DHCP, wireless security etc. on my local network). I had intended to set the SE567 to "bridge only" as recommended earlier in this thread but discovered everything was working just fine without taking this step.

Don't know for sure if this answers your question wrt dual bridge/router mode however my SE567 settings are all default AFAIK with the exception of the initial configuration of Username/Password using a PPPoE connection to connect to my ISP.

I am also pleased to report the orginal problem of not being able to connect via wireless to the SE567 router with my iPAQ 111 has been solved using the new router

That's good then. Glad to hear things are fixed. It seems like there's been a lot of complaints about the Gigaset SE567 around here. Time for a firmware fix-it I assume?

Might just be that a FAQ section needs to be added to the Forum so the popular and common setup questions can be ask/answered?

Examples:

• I have my own Router, How do I Bridge the ISP Modem so that I'm don't have Double NAT?

• How do I share my DSL Modem with multiple PC? Can I use a 10/100 Multi-port Switch?

• How do I Port Forward the ISP Modem/Router?

• How do I reset the ISP Modem?

That'd work. Wouldn't we need to PM the moderator for this forum, justin to nominate this place for a full forum in order to do that though?

Yes that's correct, or we could ask for a thread to be made sticky and put Questions/Answers there and it would be at the top of the Forum being a sticky topic.

Links to existing info could be added.

And the high demand FAQs could have direct pointers like:
