1 edit | gmail notifier and https
Wasn't sure where to post this or even if anyone still uses Google's Gmail Notifier.
Anyway, the notifier is a small app that runs from the tray, alerting the user to new mail, etc. It also can direct send-to links to gmail. »toolbar.google.com/gmail-helper/···ows.html Works well for my single-gmail account needs.
A while back there was an issue brought to light with accessing gmail via unsecure http and cookies. So I've been using https. I didn't stop to consider what the Gmail Notifier is doing itself, though.
Recently, Gmail added the option to force https, regardless of how you arrive to the site (via http or https). I checked the option. Around this time my Notifier stopped working. I didn't connect the two for a few days.
There's no update to the Notifier at the above link so, to get things working again, the choices are to uncheck the force https option in Gmail or hack the Notifier.
Hacking the Notifier (gnotify.exe) is a very simple task... the strings are all in there in plain text. Use your favorite hex editor, change both instances of "http:" to "https:"
• 1st place
 1 - what you want
 1 - what you had
• 2nd place
 2 - what you want
 2 - what you had
FWIW, I wasn't the first to mention this... »www.wikihow.com/Hack-Gmail-Notif···-Use-SSL They don't change the second http: (in the iframe string) ...maybe not necessary, I guess. However, this change should force https even if you have that option disabled in Gmail, itself.
edit: should mention the error message from the notifier was "service temporarily unavailable" -- My Site |
