Politics != Olympic Competition

I'm tired of idiots exploiting the Olympics in order to further their Political interests.
It's about Countries sending their best ATHLETES to compete, not about freaking... Tibet, or baby Seals being clubbed.

If it's going to be like this every year, they should just hold the Olympics in Greece or Rome every year (as a nod to the ancient origins of the games) so people will start focusing on the competitions instead of where the competiton is being held.

Should they also compete in the nude?

Don't worry, it'll only be like this every 4 years (for the Summer Games).

Article 1, "Fundamental Principles of Olympism", The Olympic Charter, Page 10 -
1. Olympism is a philosophy of life, exalting and combining in a balanced whole the qualities of
body, will and mind. Blending sport with culture and education, Olympism seeks to create a
way of life based on the joy of effort, the educational value of good example and respect for
universal fundamental ethical principles.

Those political protesters do have a point protesting the 2008 Summer Olympics. Protesting the failure of the IOC to uphold the Olympic Charter. What's ethical about political suppression, or for that matter, hostile takeovers, eh?

The Olympics are trying to be inclusive, and part of that is involving the countries and continents of the world directly. We need some Olympics in South America and Africa, btw...

The political aspects are actually an issue in China of practicality. Journalists are restricted as to where they can go, and how they can report. I'm frankly surprised they're allowing any live feeds at all. The air quality in China is atrocious, and Athletes from almost every country in the world are disadvantaged because Chinese competitors have grown up with higher pollution than anyone in the western world routinely sees (seriously, Beijing puts 1980's LA to shame).

So, while the hyperbole was fantastic (clubbing baby seals does always make me giggle), there's a lot more going on than you seem to know or acknowledge.

Oh, sadly I literally meant that. There are some idiots who want to boycott the Olympic Games in Canada over the seal hunt. Despite the fact that it's against the law to kill baby seals.

As far as the Olympics being inclusive, perhaps instead of several countries spending millions of dollars (collectively) bidding for the olympic games to be held in their country and millions for the stadiums and upgrades to their infrastructure... that money could be spent to help pay for countries with less money to have training facilties built and for plane tickets for them to get to the games.
Having the games in the same place every year doesn't make a difference, considering it's the same group of countries that keeps getting the games.
Also, good luck on getting the games in South America or Africa, I hope athletes like getting kidnapped and held for ransom.

I agree with you on most of your post. That said, if the Olympics were in the same place each year, I wouldn't watch. Part of the fun of being a spectator is learning about the country, seeing pretty new stadiums, and so on. The competition is great, but as a spectator I need more than that.

Let's not forget that the 2 instances of Olympic tragedy in the World happened in the United States in '96 and in Germany in '72. Athletes got kidnapped during the Olympic games in Munich, Germany. Kidnappings were (and still are) a major concern in Greece, but during the Olympics everything went well. I wouldn't be so quick to judge, considering statistically, Olympic Athletes are at more risk in the West than they are in the rest of the world...

The Olympics have always been about politics.

I have no idea what you're smoking, but if you think otherwise obviously you never paid attention in history class.

Oh, yeah? Always, right? So when it was a bunch of naked greeks running around in a stadium, it was about politics? Or was it when the Romans...were...also running around naked?
Do you often practice politics in the nude, while excerting yourself physically?

I doubt you know much about history or politics, other than what you learned from wikipedia of course. I came to this conclusion after reading your extensive reubttal of my lamentation on the exploitation of the Olympics (wow, it was a whole sentence!), followed by an ad hominem attack accusing me of abusing drugs and being an inattentive student.

I will admit that you are correct, though for the wrong reasons, I didnt pay that much attention in history class. I was quite unimpressed at being taught history out of text books, by a biased teacher who pollutes their students with their own beliefs. I chose instead to study for myself, and read books by many authors on many subjects, rather than allow myself to be told what books to read and what answer was *correct* in cases where two authors make equally probable hypotheses.

I know I wrote alot for you to digest, but just take your time and sound out those vowels. You can do it!

What's funny about this is that even the ancient games were political. Why else do you think they had competitions between the various cities? For the athletes' sake??? HAHAHAHA riiight..

Really now, if you're going to make a smart-ass post, at least wait until you're actually right.

Why do we have NHL games between different cities then? Hell, why do we even have sports at all? Why do people compete in the Olympics today? No it's not for political purposes, it's because people want to be the best and prove it. It gets funded by people who want to latch on to that athletes success, and people from the same country support the athlete because they think that somehow if someone from their country is the best at something, that somehow that works its way back down to them, and they're just as awesome as the athlete just because they came from the same place.

Well, to be honest, both of us are correct to some extent. I was just pissed that he chose not to justify his position with more than "Ur wrong lol ur on crack n stuped". Not that I should expect anything more on the internet I suppose.
Atleast your response had more substance than his, you really dont justify your position either though.
