smitmor join:2004-04-10 Springhill, LA | My DSL Profile Can any of you CenturyTel techs help me out and tell me what profile I am on? I just got my DSL hooked up today and it was advertised "Up to 15 mbit" but I know I am too far to actually get that speed. My stats are a little iffy & the connection drops pretty often.
Here are the modem stats from a few minutes ago, before the connection dropped:
Transceiver Revision: 5.2.2.0 Vendor ID Code: 4 Line Mode: not defined Data Path: Interleaved Transceiver Information Down Stream Path Up Stream Path DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 9120 894 Margin (dB) 4.0 10.0 Line Attenuation (dB) 49.0 26.5 Transmit Power (dBm) 20.8 12.1
Here are my stats after the connection came back up:
Transceiver Revision: 5.2.2.0 Vendor ID Code: 4 Line Mode: not defined Data Path: Interleaved Transceiver Information Down Stream Path Up Stream Path DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 7888 894 Margin (dB) 6.5 10.0 Line Attenuation (dB) 49.0 27.0 Transmit Power (dBm) 20.8 12.1
And after being down for 15 minutes or so, it came back up with these stats:
Transceiver Revision: 5.2.2.0 Vendor ID Code: 4 Line Mode: not defined Data Path: Interleaved Transceiver Information Down Stream Path Up Stream Path DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 11172 894 Margin (dB) 6.0 10.0 Line Attenuation (dB) 49.0 26.5 Transmit Power (dBm) 21.8 12.1
Do I need to be put on a different profile to accommodate for this?
Thanks, Morgan |

 | Your downstream SNR margin is to low, this is why your modem keeps dropping sync. I would say you need to be adjusted to the 6 meg profile and if that doesn't help maybe 4 meg. Do you have inline filters or are you filtered at the NID? I adjusted a customer yesterday as they were set to a 10 meg profile, but in the DSLAM the highest possible rate was 8 meg. I had to set them to 6meg and everything worked fine after that. |

smitmor join:2004-04-10 Springhill, LA | Can you take a look at mine and see what profile it's on? The DSLAM here does 10 meg -- we have 10 meg at the office and it's awesome. My guess is they have me set to 10 when 8 or 6 is the best I can get. I'd like to try 8 though just to see how it does. Thanks! |

But as satcomlink said, it's your noise margin being so low, and your line attenuation being on the high side for that speed, that is hurting your connection stability. Do you have the inline filters on each of your phones? If so, then you really need to look at having a whole house splitter installed. This would send the DSL only to the 1 phone jack where your modem is plugged into, and you wouldn't have to have all those filters plugged into each device. The whole house splitter also (usually) greatly helps improve inside signal stats. |

smitmor join:2004-04-10 Springhill, LA | I have filters installed, but I'm having the house re-wired. Where can I get a whole house splitter?? |
|
IconTime KeeperPremium,VIP,MVM join:2004-01-07 Little Rock, AR kudos:3 | reply to smitmor Centurytel sells/installs the whole house splitters, or you can buy them online, you just have to be careful and not buy junk.
Are you rewiring your house, or having it done? Make sure that you have at least category 3, twisted pair wire. |

 | reply to smitmor I adjusted your profile to 8 meg,can you post your stats again for us. |

Transceiver Revision: 5.2.2.0 Vendor ID Code: 4 Line Mode: G.DMT Mode Data Path: Fast Transceiver Information Down Stream Path Up Stream Path DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 8128 768 Margin (dB) 8.0 6.0 Line Attenuation (dB) 48.5 22.0 Transmit Power (dBm) 18.9 12.4
So far so good. Thanks! |

IconTime KeeperPremium,VIP,MVM join:2004-01-07 Little Rock, AR kudos:3 | reply to smitmor As long as it doesn't dip down below 8, you should be alright. I'd still spring for the whole house splitter though, as it may help stabilize things by a couple more db's. |
|
smitmor join:2004-04-10 Springhill, LA | I talked to a tech from Centurytel and he said he'd come put in a whole-house splitter for me. For the mean time, I "rigged" it by splitting the rest of the house from the dsl signal using a regular splitter and the snr margin went up to 9.5. |
|
smitmor join:2004-04-10 Springhill, LA | Well, it's still acting goofy. Let's try 6.
ADSL Line State: Up ADSL Startup Attempts: 2 ADSL Modulation: DMT Datapump Version: DSP 4.2.1.0, HAL 4.2.1.0 Downstream Upstream ---------- ---------- SNR Margin: 8.00 6.00 dB Line Attenuation: 46.00 23.50 dB Output Power: 18.92 12.46 dB Errored Seconds: 0 0 Loss of Signal: 0 0 Loss of Frame: 0 0 CRC Errors: 0 2 Data Rate: 8128 736
Why do you suppose the downstream snr went down so much? It was at 10db when I was on 10 meg... |

|
smitmor join:2004-04-10 Springhill, LA 1 edit | The stats I posted above were done with a homerun from the NID. The rest of the house is disconnected. |

 | reply to smitmor I have changed your profile to 6 megs. Can you re post yor stats. Thanks.. |

Do I need to worry about the upstream margin?? |

 | reply to smitmor No, you don't need to worry about the upstream SNR. The main thing here is the downstream SNR margin.
SN Margin (AKA Signal to Noise Margin or Signal to Noise Ratio) Relative strength of the DSL signal to Noise ratio. 6dB is the lowest dB manufactures specify for modem to be able to synch. In some instances interleaving can help raise the noise margin to an acceptable level. The higher the number the better for this measurement. 6dB or below is bad and will experience no synch or intermittent synch problems 7dB-10dB is fair but does not leave much room for variances in conditions 11dB-20dB is good with no synch problems 20dB-28dB is excellent 29dB or above is outstanding |

You may try changing his data path to interleave if it's still on fast path. That usually will add a couple of db increase on the margins. |
