| My DSL Profile Can any of you CenturyTel techs help me out and tell me what profile I am on? I just got my DSL hooked up today and it was advertised "Up to 15 mbit" but I know I am too far to actually get that speed. My stats are a little iffy & the connection drops pretty often.
Here are the modem stats from a few minutes ago, before the connection dropped:
Transceiver Revision: 5.2.2.0 Vendor ID Code: 4 Line Mode: not defined Data Path: Interleaved Transceiver Information Down Stream Path Up Stream Path DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 9120 894 Margin (dB) 4.0 10.0 Line Attenuation (dB) 49.0 26.5 Transmit Power (dBm) 20.8 12.1
Here are my stats after the connection came back up:

| Re: My DSL Profile Your downstream SNR margin is to low, this is why your modem keeps dropping sync. I would say you need to be adjusted to the 6 meg profile and if that doesn't help maybe 4 meg. Do you have inline filters or are you filtered at the NID? I adjusted a customer yesterday as they were set to a 10 meg profile,but in the DSLAM the highest possible rate was 8 meg. I had to set them to 6meg and everything worked fine after that. | |

Are you rewiring your house, or having it done? Make sure that you have at least category 3, twisted pair wire. | |

| No, you don't need to worry about the upstream SNR. The main thing here is the downstream SNR margin.
SN Margin (AKA Signal to Noise Margin or Signal to Noise Ratio) Relative strength of the DSL signal to Noise ratio. 6dB is the lowest dB manufactures specify for modem to be able to synch. In some instances interleaving can help raise the noise margin to an acceptable level. The higher the number the better for this measurement. 6dB or below is bad and will experience no synch or intermittent synch problems 7dB-10dB is fair but does not leave much room for variances in conditions 11dB-20dB is good with no synch problems 20dB-28dB is excellent 29dB or above is outstanding | |

| Re: My DSL Profile I would definitely try to get that replaced, with a whole house splitter in the new NID. It may not be the complete cause of your dropping snr, but it wouldn't hurt either.
It's possible that the cable pair needs more conditioning. Maybe there's a bridged tap, or a left in drop somewhere on the line, adding footage and causing your issues. | |

Update 2: Nobody ever showed up today. I called tech support again and they said the tech noted that there was no access to the house and they left a tag on the door. I was there most of the day, I had given them my cell #, and there was no tag on the door. Better luck next time, eh? | |

I'm still fighting with CenturyTel. They were supposed to send someone out yesterday, but he never showed. Today they said someone would be out this afternoon and he would call me on my cell for access to the house. When I got home there was a note on the door: "Sorry we missed you," with a handwritten note that everything was fine at the NID and my alarm system was the problem. The trouble with that is that my alarm is not hooked up. I've rewired the house and have a single wire going from the NID to my closet, which is plugged directly into the modem until they get my line fixed. There is no alarm and not even a single phone jack hooked up at this point. I called and had to speak to a Supervisor and finally, after a lot of fussing, got them to send the techs back out.
Two techs arrived and immediately stated "everything is fine here - - your alarm is causing the interference." I again told them that the alarm was not hooked up, and neither were any of the phone jacks. They still insisted that my inside wiring was the issue, so I told them that the Internet group had already confirmed that my line quality was an issue. One of the techs said "your line quality is perfect." So... having my laptop handy and the modem already plugged directly into the NID around the corner, I walked them over and showed them my 6.0 SNR, to which the guy said "6 is perfect." I told him everybody knows that anything under 10 makes for an unstable connection, and with a SNR that low, by the time you add the extra footage to get the wire into the house, the signal is dead. He still insisted that there was nothing they could do, so I started sputtering off buzz words I learned here like "bridge tap," "loop length," "whole house filter," and "swapping pairs" and all of a sudden he changed his mind. Now somehow, they can come back in the morning and check all of those things.
Oh, and by the way, someone somewhere changed me back to 10 mbit, which is probably the reason I haven't had any internet service since Friday, but at this point I'm gonna leave it at 10 so they will see how bad the line sucks when they start testing.
Thanks to all of you who gave me advice. It seems that if you had not helped me do their job for them and figure out the cause of the problem they would have just stuck me with no service. | |

I sure miss the days when people knew their job. Maybe I should give you the tech's cell # so you can explain to him how DSL works.

1 edit | Re: My DSL Profile We have seen others with problems that occur at a certain time. The most common problem that I have seen at night is dusk to dawn lights, either street lights, or outside lights on your home, or a neighbors.
Keep close tabs on the exact moment, try to watch outside, or it could be something inside your home that you turn on at the same time during the evening.
(added) Just checked, looks like sunset is 7:59 for your area currently.
