| Nearing the end on my Sprint Broadband Direct fixed wireless I'm going to miss it, and now that most people have already arranged some other internet, it is SMOKING fast here in San Jose (commonly over 5 megabits). All of the alternatives are rather unattractive. For the same money, I'm going to be getting a quarter the speed with monthly caps. This is the first time in my experience with computer technology that I am going to be paying MORE for LESS.
There were a few burbles in this last month of service. Some people that didn't use their connections much had them turned off, just to get them to call tech support so that the customer could be notified that the service would be discontinued at the end of July. Whoever thought that was a good idea is some kind of idiot. And when I called the support number to get my neighbor's internet turned back on, I was not connected to an overseas support department. I got to talk to a slightly discouraged american sounding guy that arranged for a "hit" on my modem, to get it reprovisioned.
I've looked at a couple of satellite providers (Hughes and Wildblue), and babysat a wildblue dish installation. So now I hate that stuff: the installers are like used car salesmen and the technical support that I got from the Indians at Earthlink was borderline criminal. The Hughes guys were pretty good, actually, with technical support. And I won't talk about FAPPING, and underdelivered bitrates.
There's some guy in our neighborhood that's running point to point microwave, 802.11 and 5.8 GHz stuff, and unless you get yourself a little dish and skim some of the cream that is being distributed to your neighborhood the bitrates are .. disappointing, at best. He can't build it out fast enough or big enough to compare to the old service. He needs hilltop locations and good viewsheds, so each step forward is a negotiation.
The G2 and G3 networks can just barely be used here. Sprint runs about 160 kbits here, which is just painful. AT&T, the evil empire, runs about a megabit. We're in a fringe area where some receives have problems choosing between EDGE and HSDPA, so from minute to minute you are either on the good network or the suck network.
And our dialup still sucks. 21.6KBaud, on a dry day with no wind. And that's AT&T, too. I talked to a guy running a T1 up the hill. The CIO that he was running for was going to be paying 600 a month for it. So much for wires.
I'll be streaming somafm's groove salad until sprint pulls the plug.

| Re: Nearing the end on my Sprint Broadband Direct fixed wireless I too am going to miss SBD. Since 2001 its worked like clockwork here in the OKC area. The only 2 times its gone down were to due a bad power supply on the modem and coax on the dish getting corroded.
Switching to Sprint Evdo, which looks like its about 1/4 of the SBD download speeds.
I'll be using be using it until they pull the plug.. which could be as soon as tomorrow!!

I'll be streaming somafm's groove salad until sprint pulls the plug. I have been using the same sprint braodband and have downgraded the service to Cricket wireless broadband for $40 a month. Nothing to brag about, but I can still watch youtube and seems pretty reasonable. Best of all...no contract. Might want to give this a try!

My Service is still working in Clovis, CA. Anybody else still working??? Aug 3rd is today. Hopefully it keeps on working woooo Clovis, CA here. My service blacked out on July 15. SBBD will be missed. Had since it was rolled out and back then, the only other option was dial up. Went without internet for two weeks after that.
Now I'm back to dialup 21.6kbps max $12 a month. I was looking at Unwired for $70 384Kbps symmetrical for $70 a month with $300 install fee. They seem strict with bandwidth useage and will throttle you. That is a huge downgrade to an avg of 60G a month download on SBBD. Only upside is it is fixed wireless and offers better ping for gaming from what I've seen. At $70 384Kbps + $300 install, the price is too steep to downgrade to.
Just found out two days ago after checking aroun, AT&T in our area is offering DSL. They can only offer the lowest speed for my number at 768kbps/384kbps $10 a month with a one year commitment + $50 DSL modem, self install. I'm appx. 30,000FT from the CO, So I'm crossing my fingers if actually comes out here. I will know in a few weeks.
BTW here's the CO info for Clovis that is recently available for DSL...
