lost DSL in Mount Vernon IL

DSL quit here around midnite, not sure of the exact time because I fell asleep and just woke up. Everything was working fine, then nothing. I'm now on dialup after several tries such as restarting my computer, restarting my modem, etc. Does anyone know if it's a real DSL outage affecting my area or is it something wrong with my computer? How and where do I start to troubleshoot it? Who do I call? Or what?

I'm back on dialup again. No DSL.

It's always a scramble at such times and I never know what to do. I looked around and found 1-877-722-3755 for "Help Desk", which connected me to an operator who I could barely understand. It was partly the telephone connection quality. She sounded like she was deep down in a barrel with very little tonal quality, but I eventually found it possible to catch a word or two occasionally. Anyway to make a long story short, she said there is a DSL outage affecting my area that may last til 7:00 A.M. There was a prior recording that said AT&T was upgrading their system and to try again after 6:00 A.M. Of course I never know what time zone they're talking about, because they don't say.

So I guess it's hurry up and wait til 6-7 am and try again. So it's back to zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz (if possible)..........

It was working again when I woke up this morning at about 7:30 am. Why can't they schedule their maintenance in advance and give everyone advance notice?

From AT+T's description of their DSL services...
"DSL Service does not include proactive monitoring security features or any other enhancements. The DSL Service does include standard maintenance from 12:00 A.M. to 6 A.M., local time, seven days a week without requirement of any additional notice to Customer. AT&T will attempt to use this window of time to provide maintenance when possible, however, AT&T reserves the right to perform service or network maintenance as needed outside this window, in which case AT&T will make a reasonable effort to notify the Customer if feasible under the circumstances."

And even then, the notification to the customer is usually only for business customers or customers who know where to look for the network status information. (»csc1.sbcis.sbc.com/systemstatus/)

That's just great... They screw with the network and I have to reboot my 2Wire Gateway to get back online? That sucks.... I woke up this morning and tried to get online only to find it not working (6:10am CST) I could see everything on my network, including the 2Wire Gateway. I looked at the status LEDs and everything looked fine...

This is just p_l_a_i_n stupid
