Holding the vendor responsible...

"We have zero tolerance for violations of the law and hold our vendor responsible for the actions of its employees," was a disappointing thing to say. The public doesn't differentiate, and this just makes Verizon look like it's passing the buck.

Of course the vendor is responsible, but so is Verizon. It's their vendor.

I guess the next time I do any business with Verizon, I have to ask if the employee I'm engaged with actually works for them?

And if he is a contractor what will you do? As long as he/she gets the job done why does it matter?

Zero tolerance means vendor or employee, if you are caught you are history

It matters because I don't want some jizz-hand giving me paperwork to sign or some other equipment that he's potentially got fertilizer on (other than the bushes).

This guy should go work for Chem-Lawn.

And then, when I bitch to Verizon about it, I get a line about how he's not their responsibility.

They can say what they will, but legally they don' have any leg to stand on. Under simple laws of agency and apparent agency, VZ will have to take responsibility whether they like it or not.

That being said, I don't know if there are any disclaimers in any agreements with the consumer or anything where VZ disclaims liability for the actions of their non-employee contractors.

There isn't. This thread started by me saying that their PR spin about holding the vendor responsible was a poor way to handle this.

I think they were trying to CYA here. If VZ were to get sued over something like this, they won't likely be able to prevail.

VZ should have stepped up, but then they'd be admitting to liability.
