Windows Update and AMD X2 6000

Hi all, just wondering why Windows Update wants to update my AMD Dual Core CPU? Just put this machine together and installation of hardware and WinXP went off without a hitch. Downloaded the Dual Core Optimizer from AMD site as well. Should I update my CPU through Windows Update?

Windows Update also wants to update my Creative X-Fi sound card as well, but last time I let it update was in my older machine and my sound stopped working! Had to uninstall drivers and clean install from driver cd... that's why I'm skeptical.

It is likely trying to update the same drivers (or maybe even older) you already have installed. i'd just ignore those updates.

Have you installed the processor driver 2nd from bottom on this page?

It may be wanting to install that driver if you haven't already installed it.

I have not, though I've thought about installing it once or twice. I'm unsure what it even does. I've read the description and don't think I need "the system" to regulate those types of parameters.

If there is just cause, other than what I'm guessing amounts to power savings, to install said driver, I might do it. PC's running nice and smooth and SC:FA runs pretty smoothly, for an X2.

If the system runs well and is doing everything you need it to do then I would leave things alone.

^True, but check the task manager to see if two CPU cores are showing up properly. I have built 10 systems to date with the 6000+ and I installed the actual processor driver with XP not with Vista (Vista has it built in). With XP you will need both the real AMD processor driver and the DC optimizer for many recent games to work properly (if you're a gamer).

Oh yes, they're both up and running. I've DLed numerous benchmark software, have AMD Power Monitor, and Task Manager shows two cores running.

Really I wouldn't be so hesitant if the Update page would actually give details! There is NOTHING in the description box about what this update does. I've searched for what the update may entail, and haven't come up with anything, so won't install it until I have a good reason to, i.e. performance increase, security increase, et cetera.

There is one other update I can think of that may be offered as a update for your system from Microsoft.

KB896256

Computers that are running Windows XP Service Pack 2 and that are equipped with multiple processors that support processor power management features may experience decreased performance

Thank you, norwegian, but I'm on SP 3. This article states that the fix is for PCs on SP 2.

I appreciate you taking the time to look!

I'm not sure if it is included in SP3, I don't remember ever seeing anything mentioned off Microsoft to say it was rectified, nor made a forced update. What ever they used for the hotfix may have been improved along the way to SP3 though.

Edit: Clarified vocab.

I see it must be included in SP3 as installing it will alert to not being a needed update due to updated code already installeed. This is good news as it was an update that was never seen in the update list here, but was always installed.
