It was a great product until ... Now I'm getting angry.
PlaceboAV just updated and now I have a service called "PlaceboAVGenuineAdvantage" sucking up 98% of my CPU and 516 MB memory and around 150,000 page faults per minute. I emailed their support and they replied that the service is a feature designed to enhance my user experience by ensuring that I have a genuine copy of PlaceboAV.

1 edit | If you have "PlaceboAVAutomaticUpdates" enabled, it will install "PlaceboAVServicePack1" without asking. When you next reboot your computer you will have a notice that you have failed Authentication.
"PlaceboAV" then enters "Limited Placebo Mode", in which it installs randomly one of several Major AV Trial Softwares on your system.
Because you have an "OEM Release" of PlaceboAV, you cannot Activate using the Internet, but must use a non-Toll-Free number to do so. You provide a 25-digit-hexadecimal number from the Activation screen to the operator, and manually enter the 32-digit-PID to Activate your PlaceboAV.
The phone number for USA Customers is in Mauritania, (which due to a military coup) is likely not answering at the moment. As a result, I entered "Limited Placebo Mode", with Norton Antivirus 2004 Trial Version installed without asking.

Apparently Service Pack 3 is available and auto-updated. 626 MB download. It silently installed Google Desktop, Yahoo toolbar, Google Checkout, MSN Explorer, Open Office, Adobe Reader, Flash Player, Silverlight, Safari, AOL 10.0., Smiley Central and trial versions of Norton 360 and McAfee Suite.
PAV is in limited mode due to the situations you mentioned, but the other stuff is running fat and happy, downloading updates, installing more "partnerware" and adding dozens of services and tray icons at startup.
When I called Mauritania, I was asked to check if my computer was turned on. I answered "yes" and was referred to level 2 in Uzbekistan. Level 2 told me to remove my router/firewall and shut down my Windows firewall, then turn off my cable modem, unplug my monitor, keyboard and the power supply plug to the primary HDD. When the system blue screened, they said it was a Microsoft problem.

It was inevitable... Malware writers have jumped on the PAV bandwagon!
Computer users in SoCal are currently battling against an outbreak of Win32/Mac.Placebo.BirdFlu.419 virus.
The cross-platform virus infects Windows and Mac computers, and attaches itself to every sent email.
A Department of Homeland Security spokesman said the source of the outbreak was traced to a batch of Bird Flu vaccine delivered to the San Diego Zoo yesterday, and that Nigerian terrorist group OMIGCYD (Oyinbo Man I Go Chop Your Dollar) is believed to have tampered with the vaccine.
The USS Kittyhawk has taken up a position just outside the three mile limit near the Nigerian port of Lagos. |
