Re: PlaceboAV - any good? said by Sparrow:There were jokes, but there was also a great deal more intelligence than is floating around here now. Apparently you're right - the intelligence level has now sunk so low that people can't tell that an obvious joke is a joke.
As for overtly labelling a joke 'a joke' - nope, I'm not going to do that. It's obvious in the joke itself. A sure way to lower the intelligence level of the membership is to start assuming that the membership isn't intelligent enough to understand what I mean.
As to whether my original posting was off-topic; well, no, I don't think it was off-topic, any more than I think that editorial cartoons in newspapers have nothing to do with the current news. In both cases, a serious point is wrapped up in a joke. At the risk of stating the blindingly obvious: I agree with the doxdesk guy's opinion of most anti-virus products. And you could have read his opinion more directly if you'd only scrolled up a little from the "PlaceboAV" part.
Lastly, what do you suppose the word "placebo" means? |

I'm glad you injected some sanity into this thread. Not only newbies may take this seriously but there were some regulars here who appeared to take it seriously/be confused. This forum is to help, and that is what we used to do here, not "test" a newbie's tech or reading skills. When someone is infected, a newbie and scared, they don't read, they continue with old habits and "click". I did not even respond to this until I had time to read the entire thread, and if I'm a little pissed, it's because I expect more from this forum than posting jokes at the risk of hurting a newbie. -- "Be simple, be earnest and spread that simplicity throughout everything you do." |

Agreed, it was a joke and a good one at that. It had serious undertones and even went as far to include an exe( it is a harmless exe as long as YOU DON'T TAKE IT SERIOUSLY and make it your sole antivirus protection!), but still came off as funny. C'mon guys, just laugh. We all need a tension breaker sometimes.

If you're fooled by something that is clearly intended as a fake, how the heck can you expect to identify a scam when you see one? The scam won't be nearly as obvious as the joke.
