173. IP Address

I know people has had trouble with the 173 IP but has anyone made any progress with Mediacom? The response I get is that there is a "master ticket" that is being worked on. It has been a month and nothing yet.

There are only a hand full of sites that are giving Mediacom the run around for getting the 173 ip address resolved. Each site that is reported to Mediacom has been taking about 4-8 business days to be resolved since it normally takes about 2 days of solid communication between the companies involved.

That is not true. I have had trouble with my Xbox Live for a month now. Nothing has been resolved.

Xbox has been one of the companies that Mediacom has been working with this issue since June. My guess is that Xbox is giving Mediacom the run around saying that its not our issue that its the issue of the ISP. When in fact the issue is on their side due to filtering that needs to be updated and Mediacom has told them that many times.

I spoke with mediacom today and they told me that there is nothing they can do. She then said there is not timeline to getting it resolved. As a result I ordered a different ISP as a much cheaper rate for internet and tv with more options.

Competition is grand, eh?

I have been looking all over for some info on this as mediacom is pretty much worthless and I saw this today.I wish I could change my ISP but all of the others in my area are very slow.I to have been having all sorts of issues with mediacom since they changed my ip, no live, can not get to lots of sites, and speed went from 19-21mb to 4-8mb had a tech out two times and all he did was test like 20 times until he got a 10mb and he said there was nothing he could do.

They do nothing because they don't have any competition. We have comcast in our area but they won't cross district lines. This is as close to a local monopoly as a community can get.

This issue is not the fault of Mediacoms. ARIN opened up the 173. scope (back in February I believe) for use with ISPs. As we all know, the IPv4 IP addresses are running out and the 173 scope used to just be for testing and experimental purposes. Of course an ISP or Server admin is going to block an experimental scope for security reasons. The 12. ip address scope does not belong to them, it belongs to AT&T. The 173.16-173.17 is Mediacoms IP scope now.

Microsoft has been given the information about the blocking of the 173. scope but they are unwilling to admit that it is an issue because it would mean them having to release private information about their security implementations. Although people know this is a known issue, it is still a risk giving out any information on the subject. They should be on their way to a fix but there's no guess on to when that will be put in to play.

here we go again... Its mediacom's fault that nobody wants to try an overbuild...

My ip switched frome a 12. to a 173. ip over the weekend. Have had nothing but trouble! I cannot get to a lot of sites. My sip server will not let me login. Speeds went to slower than slow. The test on here say I have no isp. Is there any way to get back a 12. ip address?

Yes just change your network interface cards MAC address and you will get a new ip. There are several programs to do this. My favorite is SMAC 2.0

Thanks for the info. I would like to know just what are all the problems caused by having the 173. ip address? Why does it show as no valid isp on certain test programs? I have been using »testmy.net for years, but now am no longer able to run any test. i can login to the sites but my system hangs when trying to run. My notebook will run fine as long as I am not using my network. Where can one find info on this issue?

The 173.16.0.0 IP scope was released from Arin for public use in February of 2008. Prior to that it was a private IP and was part of a BOGON filtering list used by various ISPs. The issue is that some BOGON filtering lists are not updated for 6 months plus. Mediacom has been contacting sites that have been reported to have the BOGON list updated.

Haha. You can't change your ip back to a 12. ip address. Once they set the routers scope, that's it. You will not get that 12. back.

Sorry Happy but
I got my 12. ip address back and now things are normal. Everything is working again. Now I can use my Sipphone to call Mediacom support and complain about the slow speeds, outages, etc.

BTW "Smac 2." looks like an interesting program. I am going to check it out.
